About the role

As a startup fueled by bold, innovative partnership development, we are looking for a scrappy, strategic fundraiser comfortable with (and excited by!) the challenges and opportunities of working in a fast-growing, fast-paced startup. The Director of Development will be responsible for expanding and growing relationships with High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) to secure significant philanthropic support for Philanthropy University’s mission. This highly cross-functional role will be based in Philanthropy U’s Oakland headquarters and will initially report into the CEO.



  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to design, lead, and drive strategy for securing support from HNWIs.
  • Coordinate with other departments to source and develop engagement opportunities for HNWI prospects and donors.
  • Participate in quarterly strategic planning processes driving (and regularly reporting on) quarterly objectives, key results, and KPIs
  • Develop and implement tools and processes to sustain and scale all resource mobilization efforts


  • Develop and maintain a multi-million pipeline of potential individual donors (high-networth individuals and family foundations), and a moves management strategy resulting in a minimum of $1.25M in annual revenue for 2019. This work will include:
  • Developing and driving a cross-functional work plan to achieve annual HNWI financial targets
  • Leading research to identify new potential donors and supporters
  • Creating and implementing events, communications, campaigns and other creative programs that elevate visibility with donors and/or partners
  • Designing and implement engagement strategies (including cold calling, networking, small group events, etc.) to introduce prospective supports to Philanthropy University’s work
  • Developing comprehensive cultivation and solicitation strategies for all prospects
  • Building long-term relationships by cultivating and stewarding current and potential donors and partners
  • Clearly articulating targeted, innovative philanthropic opportunities to current and potential donors
  • Successfully closing six- and seven-figure gifts
  • Collaborate internally to provide donors with timely reporting on the utilization of funds and progress towards strategic priorities
  • Collaborating with CEO to manage a portfolio of prospects in the C-Suite relationships
  • Developing strategies to engage Board members in development activities and unlock Board members’ networks for fundraising purposes, as appropriate
  • Designing and implementing a Planned Giving and Donor Advised Fund strategy and serve as point person for all prospective Planned Giving and DAF donors
  • Actively maintaining donor data and moves management processes within Salesforce
  • Tracking and allocating funding in accordance with donor wishes.



  • Demonstrated experience with resource generation from multiple sources including individuals, and foundations, with a progressively-increasing track record of success
  • Experience designing and implementing moves management strategies for large portfolios of donors
  • Demonstrated ability to close six- and seven-figure figure gifts from multiple donor types
  • Exceptional communication (including a strong understanding of fundraising communications and expert ability to ‘make the ask’)
  • Skilled storyteller with exceptional ability to help potential donors see themselves in the mission and work of the organization
  • Experience grantwriting for family foundations
  • Willingness to coordinate efficiently with a remote/dispersed team
  • Expertise and comfort with being externally-facing with high-level leaders and stakeholders across geographies, sectors, and organizational types
  • Ability and willingness to travel (up to 25%)
  • Exceptional project management abilities
  • Solutions-oriented; ability to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly-changing startup environment and to radiate positivity, even when under pressure
  • Experience with CRM database management systems required;
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and data-driven strategic thinking
  • Great sense of humor
  • Demonstrated passion and joy for connecting HNWI to funding opportunities that will improve the lives of individuals around the world


  • Preferred experience with technology or technology platforms, working in a technology-centered organization
  • Experience fundraising for programmatic efforts in the Global South
  • Experience with Salesforce
