Director of Development

Charter School Growth Fund - Denver, Colorado - Full time


The Charter School Growth Fund (CSGF) is a leading nonprofit venture philanthropy fund dedicated to identifying the nation’s best public charter schools, funding their expansion, and helping to increase their impact. Our portfolio includes 60+ charter school networks that operate 870+ schools and serve more than 370,000 students in 28 states. We operate with the same strategies, discipline, and focus as a venture capital firm by awarding multi-year grants and loans to talented education entrepreneurs who are building networks of high-quality charter schools that enroll significant numbers of low-income and minority students. Ultimately, we think our portfolio can grow to serve ~1,000,000 students.


CSGF is seeking a Director of Development to manage and grow the organization’s partnerships with philanthropic individuals and foundations. The Director will serve as the first point of contact for a discrete portfolio of current and prospective donors. He/she will also work with CSGF leaders to set and pursue ambitious goals for the organization’s next five-year fundraising strategy. To be effective in this role, he/she will need to maintain a deep understanding of the CSGF portfolio, programs, and data. The position is ideal for a well-rounded professional with strong strategic thinking, interpersonal, and analytical skills who seeks to expand the impact of excellent public schools nationwide.


Reporting to the Senior Director, Investor Relations, and collaborating closely with the CEO, COO, and Investor Relations Team, the key responsibilities of the Director of Development will include:

  • Donor Engagement (60%): Developing and implementing strategies for 12-15 donors that lead 90% of them to continue supporting CSGF in the future. This will involve independently developing excellent written, verbal, and visual communications comprised of detailed qualitative and quantitative information.
  • Fundraising Strategy (15%): Collaborating with CSGF leaders to develop a long-term fundraising strategy and cultivate a pipeline of 25+ prospective donors per year. This will involve creating new processes to guide prospect research and engagement, customizing communications and materials, and improving existing fundraising systems.
  • Project Management (15%): Lead a set of seasonal projects involving current and prospective donors such as content for and communications related to the CSGF Portfolio Retreat, Annual Investor Report, and CSGF board meetings. This will require close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders and comfort leading projects from ideation through execution.
  • Grant Operations (10%): Oversee and help manage internal grant and fundraising operations in a way that keeps all Investor Relations Team members informed, engaged, and prepared for high-stakes interactions. This will involve managing financial and milestone reporting systems, reviewing and organizing critical grant materials, writing thank you notes, and facilitating internal planning and coordination meetings.

    Skills and Characteristics

  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communicator. Critical skills include listening, summarizing, organizing, and presenting complex information in a clear and concise manner•Analytical and system-building prowess; aptitude to develop and communicate through a mix of tables, charts, images, and text
  • Ability to speak articulately about educational inequities and what can be done to address them with current and prospective donors and program officers•Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, manage simultaneous projects, collaborate across teams, and shift priorities as needed•Proficiency with G-suite and Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe
  • Educational Background and Work Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years work experience in a fast-paced, results-oriented organization, preferably in a fundraising or business development role
  • Track record of managing six+ figure grants as the primary point of contact with principals and/or program officers
  • Experience working in K-12 public education, with moderate to advanced understanding of charter schools
  • Experience working with a Salesforce-based customer relationship management (CRM) system is a plus•Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred (MPP, MPA, MBA, or MA in marketing, economics, or journalism)

    Compensation is commensurate with experience and education. CSGF offers a very competitive compensation package and this position is eligible for a performance bonus.


    We strongly prefer candidates who want to be based in Denver/Boulder. The Director of Development will have limited travel (2-3 times per year) if based in our preferred location.
