Director of Curriculum and Instruction

OVERVIEW

Valor Collegiate Academies is hiring an experienced Associate Head of School with a strong vision for curriculum who is excited to share our mission of academic excellence and empowering scholars to live inspired and purposeful lives.

Our high school, Valor College Prep, was founded in the 2018-2019 school year. As we’ve added one grade level each school year, our founding class of students will be graduating in the 2021-2022 school year. The Associate Head of School serves as an integral member of the campus leadership team, working in tandem with the Head of School, Director of Student Life, Instructional Coaches, and other school leaders to achieve exceptional outcomes for all students. This role has a heavy focus on curriculum vision setting and instruction.

The Associate Head of School will provide academic leadership and vision in the planning, implementation, and direction of Valor College Prep’s instructional systems. With deep knowledge, experience, and passion for curriculum and instruction, the Associate Head of School will be responsible for cultivating a culture of student achievement, ensuring high levels of instructional excellence, and contributing to the development of Valor’s rigorous model of instruction. As Valor is committed to providing a balanced education for our diverse student body - with academic rigor paired with comprehensive human development at the heart of our model - it is essential that our school leaders have a passion for both academic excellence and social-emotional learning. This position will play a critical role in ensuring Valor students are equipped with the skills necessary to pursue the paths of their choice - college, career, and beyond - to live inspired, opportunity-filled lives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Teacher Coaching

  • Coach a small cohort of teachers to improve their practice through individualized coaching, professional development series, modeling, and collaborative planning
  • Guide teachers’ understanding of and model the Valor Core Teaching Framework to ensure consistent, high quality instruction
  • Consistently analyze teacher practice through weekly classroom observations, data analysis, and examination of student work
  • Create targeted, individualized coaching plans to empower teacher growth and development
  • Collaborate and lead specific grade level or content team meetings
  • Create and deliver professional learning sessions for teachers centered on effective teaching strategies and data analysis
  • When needed, create and implement teacher development plans to support teachers with targeted growth and improvement areas

Coaching and Management of Instructional Team

  • Coach and support a team of instructional coaches to develop their coaching and leadership skills, to in turn, support teachers in their classroom instruction
  • Use observation tools and data to support instructional coaches in determining classroom-specific performance targets to improve coaching effectiveness
  • Create and deliver professional learning sessions for instructional coaches on effective teacher development strategies
  • Collaborate with Head of School on meeting academic and post-secondary targets

Academic Vision Setting

  • Provide leadership and management of the high school’s academic intervention programs
  • Collaborate with the high school’s operations leaders on matters related to academic operations (i.e. benchmark testing, testing schedules and coordination, ACT prep, etc)
  • Support school culture and academic data analysis alongside the school leadership team to identify gaps in data and effectively problem solve
  • Design and lead ongoing network and school-based professional development sessions for teachers, instructional coaches, and other school-based faculty
  • Partner with Valor’s CAO, school leaders, and instructional coaches in the development and implementation of strong high school curriculum grades 9-12
  • Keep current with standards, benchmarks, and indicators; develops standards-based instructional planning tools and resources
  • Facilitate the creation and revision of network vertical and horizontal alignment maps for standards, skills, content, assessment types, writing and research, and student support
  • Provide teachers and instructional coaches with support in intellectual preparation of their subject areas as well as high-quality, actionable data analysis

School-Based Duties

  • Enforce, uphold, and exhibit school’s values, student management policies and culture
  • Own arrival duty, recess or lunch duty, and dismissal duty
  • Attend family meetings, orientation, and other school events
  • Lead and attend faculty Circle once a week (Wednesdays from 4:00-5:00p.m.)
  • Participate as a hiring team member and support with new hire onboarding and development

CRITICAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • You hold a Bachelor’s in Education or subject area of interest (master’s degree preferred but not required)

  • You thrive on data. You can analyze qualitative and quantitative data to inform instructional decisions
