Departmental Overview

The New Business Development Director will have an exciting opportunity to be a part of start-up venture within the College of Engineering at the University of California Berkeley. The primary goal of this position is to build the Executive Education business in the College of Engineering with the mission of increasing revenue from external and non-traditional sources.

Drawing on substantial experience (7-10 years) in selling and marketing educational institutions’ educational programs to hi-tech corporate and other institutional clients, the Director plays a significant role in building new and maintaining existing relationships with outside (non-campus affiliated) companies and organizations. The position will partner closely with the Assistant Dean of International and Corporate Partnerships and the Director of Operations.

The Director will conceive, plan, design, and implement multi-faceted sales programs and strategic campaigns, including brand development. In collaboration with the Assistant Dean for International and Corporate Partnerships, College of Engineering specialists, campus units, and third party vendors this position is charged with developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive promotional strategies and plans for existing and new executive education and professional development programs. An important factor for success in this role will also be the understanding of the market and College of Engineering instructional resources (faculty, lecturers, etc.) and utilizing that knowledge to develop new revenue-generating programs (customized or open enrollment) that meet market needs. Success of the programs will be determined by match with client need and scope and scale of program (breadth of faculty involvement, applicability of material, revenue generation potential, etc.). As a sample benchmark for a fixed program, a new section or program the scale of the Engineering Leadership Professional Program (40-50 students; ~$500K in revenue), or a large multi-year, multi-section program with one client (e.g., $1.5M over 2 years) or several individual customized programs throughout the year in similar size and revenue potential.

The New Business Development Director reports to the Director of Academic Affairs for Executive Education..


60% Sales and Business Development:

  • Secures new client contracts while maintaining strong relationships with established customers (Obtains new participants/clients for custom and open enrollment programs).
  • Provides customers with sales quotes and proposals of educational program offerings.
  • Builds upon existing personal contacts while developing new contacts to achieve sales targets.
  • Collaborates with others in a team environment to expand account activities and relationships.
  • Creates high impact relationships with prospective customers face to face.
  • Manages sales of varying complexity in a dynamic and high profile educational market.
  • 35% Marketing Program Design, Planning, and Implementation:
  • Creates, develops, implements and manages comprehensive promotional sales strategies/plans, including short and long-range strategic planning.
  • Creates, develops, implements and evaluates strategic sales programs, projects, and campaigns.
  • Creates, plans, produces, and evaluates marketing, advertising, and sales promotion materials to implement sales strategies and objectives.
  • Creates, plans, produces, manages and evaluates events, including both campus-sponsored events and events sponsored by external resources such as private corporations.
  • Conceives, designs, and produces informational material for sales force and media communications designed to reach maximum number of partners/prospects.
  • Ensures promotion of "brand" identity and maintains and monitors "brand" communications to both campus and off-campus agencies.
  • Consults with campus management, product managers, sales departments, and advertising agencies to develop and implement promotional plans and recommends sales philosophy, potential approaches, and media strategies.
  • 5% Administers sales budget, ensuring that budget goals are met; as required meets revenue generating goals through effective relationships with external sources.

    Required Qualifications

    *This is a one-year contract position. Contract positions may be extended based on operational demand. Contract positions are eligible to participate in the health and welfare programs offered by UC Berkeley. There is no relocation package associated with this position.

    *Expertise in sales, edutech sales, channel development, cold-calling, securing sales calls/company visits, relationship building, and business development with proven results.

    *5+ years of proven techniques increasing sales, revenue generation and increasing market share.

    *B-to-B and individual sales. Ability to secure new clients and close new business on schedule, using strong negotiation skills.

    *Ability to listen and understand client and market needs and communicate those needs to supervisor, colleagues, and faculty in order to develop programs that meet market or client needs.

    *Advanced knowledge of sales (hunter mentality), marketing techniques, negotiations, and applications relevant to the field of promotion and advertising both within b-to-b and individual products lines.

    *Excellent written, visual, interpersonal communication and political acumen skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    *Experience selling online education highly desirable.
