Director of Applied Learning Sciences

The Director of Applied Learning Sciences will support the Learning Sciences, Measurement & Data Analytics department which consists of a multidisciplinary team that optimizes teaching and learning products and services. The department includes staff with expertise in the learning sciences, assessment design, accessibility, and psychometrics and analytics. This expertise is leveraged in action-oriented projects in support of the HMH mission and in consulting with internal and external customers. The insights gained throughout the build-measure-learn cycle are used to maximize the likelihood of HMH products and services meaningfully impacting the lives of students and teachers. The team provides solutions by developing innovative approaches that help internal and external customers achieve their teaching, learning, and assessment goals despite practical barriers and limitations.

The Director Applied Learning Sciences will execute the delivery of the HMH Learning Spines and their interconnections to products and services in support of sophisticated reporting and the development of grouping and content recommendation engines. The Director will provide thought leadership in the design of innovative learning environments and products that address the K-12 continuum by working collaboratively across a variety of business areas to establish and execute research- or project-based agendas that reflect the HMH strategic direction. The Director will define the process for and support the integration of learning sciences and data analytics in the design, development, implementation and improvement of technology rich environments for learning and assessment in a matrixed organization. The Director will identify and respond to opportunities for internal and external consulting to highlight the meaningfulness of learning sciences in the product development life cycle and the desired outcomes of programs and platforms. This role will lead a team of professionals working to achieve overall organizational goals.


  1. Work closely with the Senior Vice President Learning Sciences, Measurement & Analytics on the development of the HMH Learning Spines (mathematics, reading, Spanish reading, SEL, and science) which serve as the interconnection in the Connected Teaching and Learning System. Work closely with Engineering, Core and SIS to implement the metadata tagging required on approximately 85% of our content to support the desired mastery model reporting and recommendation engines.
  2. Develop and implement strategic initiatives for integrating RAMP, the HMH principles of learning sciences, into the build-measure-learn lifecycle and SIS, Core, and Services outcomes. Provide strategic leadership and direction across HMH in development, implementation, and support of a learning sciences and data culture agenda which integrates the most recent findings from the learning sciences, principled design, digital learning, assessment environments, and data mining in support of HMH’s mission, strategic direction, and products.
  3. Empower Applied Learning Sciences to do their best work in an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation and fosters development and learning. Translate the company’s strategic vision into ALS KPIs and help the team understand their impact on HMH’s success. Assess direct reports’ performance and partner on career planning. Act as a collaborator and catalyst, breaking down complex problems into simple solutions and leading through change.
  4. Identify and respond to opportunities for internal and external consulting and training to highlight the meaningfulness of learning sciences with the aim of growing the organization’s capacity for developing and applying approaches to make generalizable inferences about learner cognitive, behavioral and navigation skills to guide product development from both a content and educational technology perspective.



  • Master’s degree in learning sciences, educational measurement, educational psychology, learning analytics, quantitative psychology or related field required. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
  • 5+ years of experience Learning Sciences or related position.
  • 3+ years of demonstrated leadership in the development of strategy and/or project management and implementation in a Learning Sciences (or related) position.
  • Experience leading and/or managing complex projects.
  • 3+ years managing/leading people.
  • Proven ability to lead and execute complex projects, including cost, resource, and schedule management as well as compliance and reporting.
  • Deep knowledge of the principles of the learning sciences and technology rich learning environments.
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Successful history of communicating technical information and key ideas to lay and scholarly audiences.
  • Ability to lead a collaborative team and maintain effective relationships in a matrixed organization.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft products
  • Effective in a remote work environment
  • Proficient use of project management tools/ software


  • Doctorate degree in learning sciences, educational measurement, educational psychology, learning analytics, quantitative psychology or related field required.
