The Director of Accounting, Reporting, & Compliance is a key member of the SPS Finance team and is responsible for Summit’s accounting operations. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and Controller, this position will provide leadership and expertise for the Finance team in the areas of technical and complex accounting policies and guidelines, and ensure compliance with continuing disclosure covenants related to Summit’s recent bond offering (which currently include technical issues surrounding areas of revenue recognition, lease accounting, deferred maintenance and depreciation of fixed assets). In addition to these immediate topics, the position will be responsible for any and all technical accounting issues, accounting policies and audit preparedness.

Summary of Responsibilities: Bond Reporting

  • Monitor use of proceeds of outstanding bonds and security and sources of payments for outstanding bonds to ensure compliance with covenants in bond documents
  • Ensure compliance with continuing disclosure documents
  • Administer procedures for post-issuance compliance, including record retention, preparation, and maintenance of quarterly and annual reports required by bond documents and Securities Exchange Commission Rule 15c2-12.
  • Consult with internal staff, including the finance and real estate teams, and external consultants, including underwriters, legal counsel, and arbitrage rebate analysts, to the extent necessary to carry out compliance procedures.
  • Ensure financial reporting documents are prepared and ready for external and internal reporting based on published due dates.

Accounting Responsibilities

  • Serve as accounting technical expert to finance and other teams.
  • Maintain financial records according to GAAP. Stay up to date on changes to GAAP.
  • Assist Controller and Director of Finance in monthly and quarterly closings and preparation of supporting schedules. Review essential work-papers needed for periodic closes.
  • Monitor cash position versus budget, and forecast cash demands.
  • Assist Controller and Director of Finance with coordination of annual financial audits and overseeing all 990 reports.
  • Review reconciliations for complex transactions, and provide support and development of new accounting procedures to support new organization growth demands.
  • Ensuring timely receipt of funds from local, state, and federal sources. Reconciling accounts receivable.

Reporting Responsibilities

  • Review monthly inter-company transfers, monthly accruals, and balance sheet at end of month close.
  • Financial reporting including statement of activities, balance sheet, fund balance, and cash forecasts to all stakeholders, including philanthropy partners, board and district authorizers.
  • Facilitate the generation of periodic financial reports including board committee reports and programmatic reports where applicable.

System Improvement

  • Assist Controller and Director of Finance in performing process evaluation and improvement of general accounting, accounts payable and cash disbursement procedures.
  • Assist in systems implementation and vendor relationship management.

Technical Requirements:

  • CPA required (active license)
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting with at least 4 yrs. experience in accounting/finance industry. Non-profit, charter school finance, or audit experience is a plus.
  • Experience with audit standards (GAAP, FASB, GASB, Federal A133 audits).
  • Significant financial management experience including SEC and/or bond reporting requirements.
  • Experience with Net Suite a plus.
  • Meet health clearance, and pass the reference, background/criminal checks, per education code.
