Job Description Summary

Reporting into the Vice President of Marketing and Engagement for Exploration and Impact, the Marketing, Communications and Engagement Director is the segment leader for the Education Constituency for the National Geographic Society. This position develops and directs performance-driven marketing and communication strategies tailored to grow the segment, drives participation and engagement in educational programs and experiences, achieves subscription growth of educational products and creates organizational impact with this audience. The marketing director identifies and develops new strategic partnerships and manages agency relationships. Working closely with multiple divisions, this person develops end-to-end education segment outreach strategies for scaled programs that support the impact goals of the projects. This role utilizes research insights and analytics, drives constituency positioning, develops strategic tactics works in partnership with the events team to manage large-scale events, and leads a results-driven marketing team for educator-focused products and experiences.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Marketing and Engagement Strategy and Plan Development: (30%). Initiates marketing segmentation, designs market research studies and develops a marketing plan that drives business goals for education products and experiences. Directs implementation of strategies and plans for communication, brand marketing, engagement, design, brand partnerships, CRM and outreach for the education division.
  • Materials Direction and Operations: (40%) Directs implementation of the marketing plan to ensure measurement, cohesion, and maximal engagement. Manages the marketing budget for education. Manages the marketing team’s input and responsibility for design materials, newsletters, news releases, media outreach, image use and related impact initiative shaping and approval. Works with the partnership and program teams to position donor communication. Works with digital and product teams to improve ecommerce flow, profile capturing, and overall user experience through the purchase funnel. g. Contributes to methodology by which to measure the impact of the team’s work and gathers and reports engagement metrics.
  • Educator Events Direction: (10%) Serves as day-­to­-day director for event management and conferences that focus on Education. Seeks new opportunities and evaluate ROI on new and existing conferences. Develops strategy, assists the events team in execution and manages the creation of related outreach, marketing and briefing materials. Attends key events and manages on­site as needed. Helps with planning of National Geographic priority events and advises and approves follow-up engagement to event attendees for key partnership events.
  • Staff management and team direction: (20%) Directs management, training, and development of marketing manager(s). Coordinates the teamwork of marketing, analytics, CRM, digital, and creative staff. Works closely with the project leads to ensure clear communication and desired results. Displays strong project management skills with the ability to mobilize and lead team quickly and effectively.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor's degree required.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

10 years in marketing with heavy emphasis on educational programs and products and at least 3+ years of management experience required.

Knowledge and Skills Required

This position requires a strong leader, creative and strategic marketer who is knowledgeable of customer segmentation, educator needs and purchase behavior, data analysis, project management, and campaign development. The marketing director is results driven, positive collaborator who can work well in a matrix environment. They must be able to manage multiple priorities at one time, effectively communicate across all levels of the organization, and encourage and develop a top performing team. This position is proficient in CRM, CMS, advertising, direct mail, social media, and education markets.
