Director: Instructional Design and Learning Support

We are currently seeking an experienced educator to serve as the Director of Instructional Design and Learning Support (Job Code: JPF02806).
Reporting to the Dean of Continuing Education and UCLA Extension, Director of Instructional Design and Learning Support provides leadership for the learning design department within UCLA Extension. Main responsibilities include the strategic development, direction, implementation, and improvement of high-volume, high-quality online course content-production processes that result in deeply engaging and personally meaningful learning experiences—in face-to-face, fully online, and blended formats--for adult learners.
The Director is expected to be a strong collaborator and in partnership with UCLA Extension program leaders, will play a key role in producing creative courses and materials designed to motivate and inspire students as they seek to learn new skills, expand their perspectives, and transform their lives through learning. This entails guiding the various functional support areas within the department, which include: technical and learning design oversight and support; learning asset production; content management oversight and support; curriculum consultation; distance-learning strategies; support of the student learning experience; and instructor/faculty development and training.
The Director of Instructional Design and Learning Support will keep abreast of changing industry trends for producing and running courses, technologies for scaling courses, and student demographics in order to create and/or support innovative online course offerings. The Director of Instructional Design and Learning Support will work in partnership with the Director of Educational Futures to co-advise institutional leadership on initiatives that ensure the innovative growth of Extension.
Candidate must have previous leadership experience and some experience within higher education or public-not-for private sector. Change management and the ability to influence, lead and direct a diverse group of staff, instructors and other internal and external stakeholders is highly essential for success in this position. Candidate must be committed to the highest level of academic standards and integrity and be familiar with educational methods and possess solid understanding of the latest technologies in traditional, hybrid and online classroom settings. A strong understanding of pedagogical approaches that lead to improved learning in online—synchronous and asynchronous environments, classrooms, and current and future learning environments. This position requires excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) and a highly collaborative working style. A graduate degree in instructional design, distance learning, educational technology, or a related academic discipline highly preferred.
UCLA Extension is one of the largest continuing and professional education units in the nation, serving nearly 40,000 students a year with 5,000 courses and 170 certificates (40 online). Its programs and courses are taught by nearly 2500 instructors. UCLA Extension is in a growth mode, responding to the changing workforce requirements emerging from a dynamic global economy. That growth includes opening new locations in Los Angeles as well as expanding UCLA’s ability to deliver at a distance through online and digital technologies nationally and worldwide.
The salary range for this position is $110,000 -$130,000. The University offers competitive benefits including full health, dental, vision, and retirement plan.
