Newsela is a technology company that helps students build their literacy skills using daily news and other forms of nonfiction. Since we launched in June 2013, Newsela is already in 75% of schools in all 50 states and over 180 countries. We are setting a new standard for what students and educators can expect of their software: gorgeous, intuitive, personalized, captivating and addictive.

Our dynamic Content department publishes a prolific supply of multi-versioned articles ranging in text complexity from grade 2-12 daily in two languages, adapted from real-world media and publishers. What turns these texts into powerful learning and teaching tools are the assessments and learning scaffolds we build onto them and the thoughtful curation of them into thematic and standards-aligned text sets, including text sets aligned to commonly used curricula. This layer of content creation ties directly to our company mission and is core to the success of our paid product, Newsela PRO. As Director, your role will be to lead the ambitious team responsible for instructional design and content curation and set the direction for what they can achieve as we take on new skills and subject areas on


  • Oversee the strategy and development of instructional content that guides and encourages teachers in their use of articles
  • Oversee the development of new assessments per subject area
  • Contract with outside consultants for subject area expertise in curriculum alignment and assessment design, as needed
  • Direct resources to ensure the ongoing production and continuous improvement of Newsela assessments
  • Provide Newsela editors a structured framework by which to understand content needs per subject area and curriculum
  • Set quarterly goals for instructional design team in sync with company priorities
  • Prepare weekly and quarterly reports on production and performance metrics related to assessment and curriculum alignment
  • Manage assessment and alignment production costs to budget
  • Oversee hiring and management of instructional design staff
  • Work cross-departmentally with Community and Product teams on initiatives designed to drive user engagement

The Ideal Candidate

  • A Master's degree in Education or related field
  • 12+ years of relevant work experience including:
  • Instructional design, including assessment
  • Curriculum design/mapping, particularly in ELA, Social Studies, and Science
  • Curriculum selection
  • Educational publishing
  • Literacy instruction
  • Personalized learning
  • 4+ years in a management, leadership or mentorship role
  • Knowledge of instructional standards (eg. Common Core State Standards)

A Few Plusses

  • Experience sourcing, distilling and implementing academic research
  • Comfortable with technology, and quick to learn new technologies/solutions
  • Demonstrated professional experience producing polished instructional content under deadline for a broad audience
  • K-12 teaching experience or school/district leadership experience
  • Experience managing external contributors/consultants
  • Able to inspire a team of self-motivated, high-performing ambitious overachievers
