Director, Human Resources (HRBPs) (San Mateo, CA)

The Human Resources Director will report to the VP HR and partner with senior management and other leaders by providing advice and guidance on a wide range of HR issues. The ideal candidate will be able to quickly establish credibility and trust with the management team and employees, serving as a go-to resource. Key focus areas are employee relations; change management; employee engagement and retention, performance and talent management; and employee and leadership development.

This is a full time position in our San Mateo, CA office with a hybrid work schedule.


  • Lead a team of HR Generalists and contribute to IXL by addressing people, culture, performance, and organizational needs across the company
  • Provide support and guidance to HR generalists, management, and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in certain circumstances
  • As part of the HR leadership team, develop and monitor overall HR strategies, systems, policies, and processes across the organization with the goal of continual improvement and promoting a positive work environment
  • In coordination with the VP HR, design and implement robust talent management strategies and programs with a focus on employee development and increased engagement
  • Provide consultation, guidance, and coaching to managers that advance IXL business and people strategies. Continue to build a feedback culture by developing capacity to deliver actionable and timely feedback
  • Diagnose organizational issues, and partner with VP HR to develop solutions and implement action plans; partner with leaders to identify risks and/or exposure to the business related to people strategy and advise on recommended solutions
  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues in coordination with the subject matter experts (Legal, Benefits, Leaves, Payroll, etc.). Ensure thorough and objective investigations are conducted
  • Act as a senior role model, representing IXL leadership qualities of authenticity, strategic agility, navigating ambiguity, and mission-driven
  • Stay current on best industry practices that can be applied and/or implemented within the organization and maintain knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance


  • Bachelor's degree
  • 10+ years of experience and progressive responsibility in human resources, talent management, and/or organizational development
  • 5 years of people management experience, including leading HR generalists and/or business partners
  • Experience in managing HR for a multi-state organization
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • High degree of discretion and confidentiality
  • Experience in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Strong technical proficiency with HR systems (Workday preferred), G-suite, and MS Office tools
  • Willing to roll up one's sleeves and perform tactical work
  • Excellent problem solving, judgment, and decision-making skills
  • Organization and project management skills along with very strong attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers, and vendors; strong team player
  • SPHR or SCP preferred
