About Every Learner Everywhere

Every Learner Everywhere’s (Every Learner) mission is to help institutions use new technology to innovate teaching and learning, empower instructors, and improve student outcomes—especially for low-income and first-generation postsecondary students and students of color. Every Learner is a generative social impact network currently formed of 11 network partners. The 11 diverse partners that comprise Every Learner represent national higher education organizations, research organizations, providers of impactful digital learning solutions, and higher education strategy and consulting organizations; they include:

  • Achieving the Dream
  • Association of Public & Land-Grant Universities (APLU) Personalized Learning Consortium
  • Association of Chief Academic Officers (ACAO)
  • Digital Learning Research Network
  • Digital Promise Global
  • EdSurge
  • EDUCAUSE
  • Intentional Futures
  • Online Learning Consortium
  • SxSW EDU
  • Tyton Partners

Established in 2017 through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with an additional investment made to support the network strategy in November 2018, the network is interested in a wide range of digital learning strategies relating to teaching, learning, and institutional transformation. It seeks to increase the evidence, awareness, availability, and adoption of adaptive courseware, especially by postsecondary institutions that serve large numbers of low-income and first-generatiostudents and students of color. The network’s first initiative focuses on providing resources and technical assistance to two- and four-year institutions in the effective implementation of adaptive learning technology to improve student outcomes. In Spring 2019, Every Learner began working with a set of institutions in three states (Florida, Ohio, Texas) and will expand nationwide to reach at least 200 institutions by 2022.

In addition to the technical assistance and resources development, the network also has work underway to align research and evaluation strategies with these institutional implementations and an active research agenda regarding market trends in the adaptive courseware/technology field.

WCET (WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies) serves as the “Intermediary” supplying connections and guidance to Network Partners in tackling the challenges and leveraging opportunities to successfully implement adaptive learning technology to improve student outcomes. WCET and WICHE are responsible for financial and management oversight of Every Learner.

About An Intermediary

There is a common theory of change for intermediary organizations working for collective social impact. Intermediaries facilitate and organize the work of network partners that often cut across multiple organizational sectors. Intermediaries typically pursue six common activities to effect the health of the network and the impact of the network; these activities include:

Guide vision and strategy

Support aligned activities

Establish shared measurement practices

Build public will

Advance policy

Mobilize funding

The Intermediary for Every Learner provides network coordination and fiscal oversight of grants, which leverages the advantages of a generative social impact network where the whole is greater than the sum of its 11 (or more) network partners.

[Note: The Stanford Social Innovation Review journal published an article in 2012 that provides a fuller description of the role of an intermediary. The article is titled “Understanding the Value of Backbone Organizations in Collective Impact.”]
