Director, Equity and Experience (NYC)

DonorsChoose.org - New York - Full time

Our Organization

DonorsChoose.org engages the public in public schools by giving people a simple, accountable, and personal way to address educational inequity.

Since its launch in 2000, more than 3.6 million "citizen philanthropists" have donated to classroom projects on DonorsChoose.org, channeling books, field trips, technology, and other resources to more than 27 million students in public schools, overwhelmingly from low-income households. Along the way, the organization helped to pioneer the field of crowdfunding and is now making an impact beyond school supplies. We are powered by a staff of 110 full-timers and 70 part-timers across our New York City and San Francisco offices, with a handful of remote colleagues scattered across the country.

Through its dedicated team and culture, DonorsChoose.org has earned recognition as:

  • The #1 "Best Nonprofit to Work For," The Nonprofit Times (2017)
  • The #1 “Best Mid-Sized Nonprofit to Work For,” The Nonprofit Times (2015)
  • The #9 Most Innovative Company in the World, Fast Company (2014)

The Team

The People Operations team’s mission is to ensure a positive, productive, and equitable experience for all candidates and employees. Our focus is on creating scalable policies and processes, anticipating the needs of our growing organization, and using best-in-class tools, technology, and methodology to drive continuous improvement. We take a data and feedback-based approach and pride ourselves on fostering an innovative and mission-driven culture.

The Role

The Equity & Experience subteam is focused on creating an inclusive, safe, and positive work experience for all employees. As leader of this team, the Director, Equity & Experience will manage two full-time direct reports, and oversee a team of five. You will partner closely with the Talent & Development team, leaders across the org, and the Executive team, to ensure progress towards our vision of being a fully inclusive organization that reflects the students we serve. The Director, Equity & Experience reports to the EVP, People Operations (a member of the Executive team).

In addition to managing the Equity & Experience sub-team, you will:

  • Work with employees, org leaders, and the executive team to identify diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) priorities and create a short and long term DEI strategy. Oversee execution of this strategy, balancing resources and employee needs.
  • Lead a cross-team DEI working group focused on staff surveys, metrics, curriculum, recruiting, and other internal DEI initiatives.
  • Work with the Office Manager and the Office Experience sub-team to solidify and execute our office strategy. Build upon our current office processes and think proactively about how to create a safe, accessible, inclusive, and forward-thinking office.
  • Oversee and support the Equity & Experience Associate in operationalizing and implementing our pipeline programs, our summer internship and fellowship, which focus on building a pipeline of talent from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Support internal affinity groups and consult with our employee-run social committee.
  • Guide our internal company communications and events strategy, including the purpose and content of our All Hand meetings, our guest Speaker Series, alumni connections, all-company emails, and Slack guidelines.
  • Lead on the strategy for and execution of our 140-person, 3-day annual all staff retreat.

About You:

  • You have 5+ years of HR, Learning & Development, or DEI experience (ideally at least 2 years of experience are in a DEI field or driving DEI outcomes).
  • You are equal parts strategist and executor. You seamlessly flow between brainstorming, executing, and delegating whether it’s related to facilities, programming, or DEI work.
  • You have proven experience researching, mapping, and rolling out a DEI strategy, including measuring efficacy of programs and policies and iterating as needed.
  • You have experience building consensus across levels and getting others onboard to try things.
  • You are a natural people-developer. Whether it’s formally through management or informally through coaching and mentoring, you have a knack for helping people flourish within organizations.
  • You have solid communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills. You excel at building relationships in any environment and enjoy connecting with people.
  • You have a deep passion for creating an inclusive and equitable work environment and world. You seek out new information to stay up-to-date and knowledgeable about industry trends.
  • You have the proven ability to handle a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and accommodate a high level of responsibility and multiple priorities.
  • You have absolute maturity and discretion.

Bonus points if you have

  • Training and facilitation experience.
  • Experience in Office Management or Office Experience.
  • An advanced degree or certificate in HR, Diversity & Inclusion, I/O Psychology, Organizational Development, or a related field.
