Director, Education Marketing

Council on Foreign Relations - New York - Full time


The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) Education Department is creating innovative educational resources to equip students and the interested public with the skills, knowledge, and perspective – the global literacy – required to understand the forces, ideas, and institutions that shape our world. These resources include World101, a growing library of primers that explain the fundamental topics of international relations and U.S. foreign policy; and Model Diplomacy, a multimedia simulation program that invites participants to role-play in the context of National Security Council and UN Security Council meetings. Both products are intended for use by non-specialists in formal academic settings, and come with an array of teaching resources and activities aimed at high school and college instructors and their students. World101 is also geared toward learners outside formal academic or instructional settings.

The director will develop, under the direction of CFR’s Vice President, Education, a comprehensive marketing strategy for both products to academic audiences and the interested public, and oversee the implementation of that strategy

The major responsibilities of this position will include (but are not limited to):

  • Developing and managing marketing strategies and distribution channels to grow audience traffic, increase market penetration, and build user engagement
  • Providing strategic decision-making for marketing that draws on digital analytics, industry best practice, and test placement results of print and digital advertising
  • Overseeing the execution of social media marketing initiatives
  • Collaborating on developing product and feature launches, unique stories, tailored messaging, and partnerships/joint ventures sponsorships
  • Collaborating with CFR’s digital design team to develop the branding for both products, including typography, photography, voice, and user experience; and to implement guidelines for using creative assets in product, design, and marketing communications
  • Attending and speaking at conferences and meetings to promote educational products and to deepen existing relationships


  • 8+ years of significant related marketing experience; experience marketing products to high schools and colleges strongly preferred
  • Experience working with educators, students, and related constituencies strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated success in driving audience growth and engagement, evaluating market entry approaches, and identifying partnership opportunities
  • Experience defining addressable markets in audience segments
  • Digitally savvy with strong analytical skills; fluency with technologies such as social media platforms, market research, SEO optimization, and data analytics platforms such as Omniture, Facebook Analytics, etc.
  • Strong project management skills in a collaborative and cross functional setting
  • Public speaking and presentation skills and experience
  • Degree in related field with strong academic credentials
  • Proven interest in and knowledge of current foreign policy issues
