Director, Assessment Design

The Director of Assessment Design drives collaboration to establish an assessment design strategy for the company by analyzing competitor’s hybrid (integrated curriculum and assessment) products deeply, by gauging market & educational research telltales, and by tapping into a deep understanding of the instructional applications of assessment to improve student outcomes.

A strong candidate should have experience in the hybrid learning space that includes using assessment for instructional placement and for response to instruction purposes. The position collaborates closely with Learning Design, Research & Learning Engineering, and Content Design to ensure appropriate pedagogic, psychometric, and implementation quality in Edmentum’s assessments. The Director will analyze in-product assessment needs against product learning design and requirement, state/district assessment RFPs, and learning standards. The Director of Assessment Design will lead a team of Assessment Designers responsible for creating assessment guidelines, blueprints, rubrics, assessment implementation/ delivery guidelines, task models, and item analysis checklists that establish the quality bar for Edmentum assessments and assessment items.

The ideal candidate will have deep subject matter expertise in both grades K-8 assessment and instructional pedagogy. The candidate will be creative, resourceful, and highly collaborative within a team-oriented environment, as well as share the company’s vision and commitment to deliver high-quality assessments that honor Edmentum’s “Educator First” focus.

Here's what you'll do:

  • Drive collaboration that establishes Edmentum’s assessment design strategy by analyzing competitor’s hybrid (integrated curriculum and assessment) products deeply, gauging market & educational research telltales, and tapping into a deep understanding of the instructional applications of assessment to improve student outcomes
  • Use assessment best practices to lead toward innovative assessment solutions, workflows, and tools, employing tools such as assessment guidelines, blueprints, rubrics, assessment implementation/ delivery guidelines, task models, and item analysis checklists.
  • Design assessments with classroom applications of learning measurement and data use in mind, applying a strong knowledge of classroom instructional practices.
  • Ensure appropriate pedagogic, psychometric, and implementation quality in Edmentum’s assessment plans through close collaboration with Learning Design, Research & Learning Engineering, and Content Design.
  • Apply a working understanding of psychometric parameters, field testing, adaptive algorithms, and item statistics while leading assessment projects.
  • Analyze assessment products against state assessment RFPs to create gap analyses and serve as an SME in producing compelling responses to state and district RFPs.
  • Develop a team of Assessment Designers into a high-performance team by growing and nurturing talent.
  • Present and communicate assessment design and development approach to customers, partners, and cross-functional departments.
  • Collaborate with the State Programs group on researching state & national standards, curriculum maps, state assessment adoptions, and/or assessment requirements to provide input into the assessment roadmap.
  • Monitor contemporary issues, trends, and research in educational assessment and instructional practices for application in assessment products and services.
  • Meet all goals of quality, schedule, and budget.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree education, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in a combination of curriculum development, and/or assessment design and development; assessment design and/or development experience required; K-8 classroom teaching experience preferred.
  • 2+ years of assessment development experience including blueprint, field testing, and psychometric interface experience required.
  • 2+ years of leadership experience required, including assessment design experience.
  • Understanding of state summative assessment design; experience developing interim benchmark assessments and computer adaptive assessments strongly preferred.
  • Highly creative with strong design and technical skills.
  • Experience using Universal Design for Learning and Evidenced-Centered Design approaches to assessment design and/or development.
  • Familiarity with measures of assessment reliability and validity; familiarity with basic psychometric theory including evaluating item quality based on psychometric performance.
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written, and business) to function effectively in a leadership role with internal and external clients and liaise with other national education experts.
  • High levels of collaboration and cross-functional skills and experience.

This role is open to any location in the US. Per the CO State requirement (EPT Rules): minimum salary of $104,900. The actual rate of pay may be higher depending on your skills, qualifications, and experience.
