Digital Developer

We are currently seeking a Digital Developer. The position is responsible for the development, coding and production of all SSEC K-12 digital learning assets, including simulations, games, VR/AR experiences, videos, animations, and assessment.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a Trust Appointment, not a Federal position. Appointment background investigation is required.

Duties:

Digital Learning Object Development Plans, evaluates, advises on and creates, through custom coding, new digital (web-based, tablet-based or mobile) multimedia learning objects and learning products of SSEC, such as interactives, demonstrations, simulations and games, in collaboration with other Curriculum and Digital Media Division staff and contractors. Contributes to sound instructional and learning designs for all digital assets, develops and user-tests prototypes, scales and implements prototypes to full product solutions.

Develops new and maintains existing digital projects and custom applications using established tools and languages such as C#, C++, HTMLS, CSS, MS SQL and ColdFusion, XHTML, XML and XSLT, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, Unity and GitHub. Develops or uses available APls and web services to search, consume and interact with third-party data that follow Smithsonian and W3C standards. Provides implementation support for web applications and services such as site search engines, security testing, usability testing, search engine optimization and integration of emerging web applications and technologies.

Maintains cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility to ensure content is accessible from a variety of different environments, adhering to Smithsonian IT and other W3C standards.

Contributes to the creation of project schedules for digital learning projects such as simulations, e-books, games, formative online assessments and personalized adaptive learning software from beginning to end; establishes benchmarks/deadlines; creates and user-tests prototypes.

Identifies and coordinates problems and resolves escalations.

Manages new digital/technological requests/projects to ensure proper compliance, leverage demand and options. Provides input into the development of SI-wide programs that enable students to use technology as learning tools and participates in OUSE and SI-wide committees and working groups as requested. Keeps abreast of new and emerging technologies and proposes potential applications of these technical developments.

Investigates and disseminates information on best practices for technology integration, sources of information on trends, research and applications.

Web Initiatives Support Performs a variety of research, infrastructure design, production and administrative tasks associated with web projects, including working closely with content providers, writers, editors and contractors to ensure that schedules are kept and that all content goes through the proper editing, review and approval processes. Maintains responsibility for the acquisition, tracking and conversion of text, image, audio and visual assets for electronic media projects.

Administrative SupportAssists with a variety of administrative and office duties, which may include: tracking Smithsonian Education content usage statistics; creating reporting documents; organizing, maintaining and archiving project files and assets; and fielding inquiries. Keeps abreast of professional and technological developments affecting SSEC digital initiatives. Prepares technical specifications, statements of work, task orders, requirement initiatives and other acquisition-related documentation necessary to effectively obtain and manage contractor-supported activities. Requirements:

*A Bachelor’s degree in interactive design, game design or programming is highly desired.

*Ability to use industry-standard web and mobile development tools and programming languages including, but not limited to: C#, C++, Adobe ColdFusion (CFML), XHTML, CSS and JavaScript, and Unity. Familiarity with protocols, formats and languages like Perl, AJAX and JSON. Skill using such tools to develop rich multimedia learning experiences.

*Knowledge of educational technology, educational technology research, digital tools and applications, and emerging technologies

*Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite Software

*Ability to support the use of “Web 2.0” applications such as blog, podcasting or videocasting applications and ability to develop or use APls and other web services to search, consume and interact with third-party image and video-sharing sites.

*Strong problem solving and communications skills

*Excellent attention to detail and time management

*Advanced skills in productivity and content management tools such as GitHub, Basecamp, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

*Knowledge of how to develop innovative and age-appropriate digital experiences in the areas of online interactives, games, simulations and demonstrations. *Knowledge of youth-focused technology development practices and the creation of high-profile digital media projects that engage learners in problem solving, critical thinking, collaborative learning and other 21st century skills.

*Knowledge of industry-standard user-experience-testing strategies for digital projects.

*Ability to travel up to 15% (as COVID-19 restrictions allow and when SSEC staff is able to travel again).

Ability to work remotely (outside of the Washington, DC area) will be considered for the selected candidate.
