Soomo Learning is seeking a Development Editor to partner with University clients to create custom digital textbooks.

Overview and Requirements

The Development Editor will be responsible for creating custom webtexts. Developing a course webtext is an iterative process, with each new term and new school providing insights into how to better teach course concepts. Leading this process requires a deep understanding of both the content itself and the challenges of teaching a general education course to non-majors. Overall responsibilities include; content analysis, composition of content, questions, and assessments, project management, and ongoing analysis of student performance and faculty support. At Soomo they focus special attention to the needs of online and at-risk learners who benefit greatly from the inclusion of student success elements and frequent self-checks. 

Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree required, Master’s or PhD preferred

Minimum Experience: 3 years’ experience in instructional design or development editing in higher education

Position Responsibilities

  1. Content Creation
    • Analysis of discipline learning objectives and pedagogical challenges
    • Evaluation of instructional strategies
    • Project management on development of new content, features, and courses
    • Curation of remarkable, well-aligned text, illustration, and video resources
    • Acquisition or production of new works of writing, illustration, or video as needed
    • Design of assignments emphasizing significance, relevance, and applicability of major ideas
    • Composition of pedagogically effective questions, in a variety of formats, to help students attend to key points throughout a course
    • Coordination with Soomo teams including Student Support, Sales, Software Development, Design, Production, and Permissions
  2. Courseware Support
    • Analysis of student performance and institutional needs
    • Ongoing revision of assigned webtexts as a whole, and as tailored at specific schools
    • Demonstrations, training, and support for faculty
    • Development of training materials for students and faculty

The following skills and attributes are highly desired:

  • Desire to facilitate student learning in an online environment
  • A willingness to manage all aspect of the webtext development and improvement process informed by the experience we’ve gained over the last 10 years in how to build exceptional courseware
  • A sense of what makes writing or video accessible and engaging as well as academically rigorous
  • The ability to engage with statistics to analyze student usage patterns and an inquisitive spirit for finding anomalies and chasing down explanations
  • A willingness to work with faculty at many institutions who are new to active learning courseware and data-driven intervention
  • Strong copyediting skills with experience conforming to editorial and style standards
  • Demonstrated ability to produce error-free work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Strong technical skills using software such as Word, Pages, and Excel and some familiarity with HTML
  • A willingness to learn new technologies and incorporate new skills and knowledge into daily work
  • A willingness to ask questions

Bonus points if you have:

  • Insight into where students struggle in intro-level general education courses, why they struggle, and ideas for how to help
  • A solid understanding of math and science at the introductory level and why these courses are included in the general education curriculum
