About the PositionThe Research in Action team at Digital Promise designs, implements, and scales programs, product features, and practices in order to support the full diversity of learners by leveraging published research and improvement methods. Much of our work focuses on improving education leaders and educators’ access to and involvement in research and increasing the relevance of research agendas to meet authentic needs from the field.

The Senior Research Scientist will lead research and evaluation efforts to support Digital Promise’s work across multiple initiatives that engage directly with schools and district leaders. In one such project, Digital Promise collaborates with school district leaders, educators, and researchers to tackle challenges in the education ecosystem with the goal of designing innovative solutions that scale. Solutions are defined as programs, tools and models that are implemented to support teaching and learning. The Senior Research Scientist will also provide qualitative research leadership for the United2Read project, which seeks to improve K–3 students’ literacy skills and close the achievement gap. As the senior researcher and evaluator for these projects, the Senior Research Scientist would be responsible for leading the design, implementation, and reporting on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics facing education practitioners and students.

As part of the Research in Action team, the Research Scientist will (1) provide an education practitioner perspective to the design, implementation, and interpretation of research and evaluation efforts, (2) support feedback loops and iterative cycles of development to optimize solutions and implementation, and (3) collaborate with program teams to set success metrics and monitor progress for continuous improvement.


  • Work in partnership with Digital Promise colleagues, educators, and education leaders to develop and pilot education innovations
  • Provide research and evaluation leadership and expertise to collaborative program and product development cycles including conducting literature reviews and landscape analysis, developing research protocols and instruments, and conducting site visits and UX/UI research
  • Lead the design and implementation of research and evaluation plans that provide actionable feedback for developers and practitioners
  • Develop research instruments and data collection protocols and collect data from the field
  • Lead data analysis and interpretation efforts to inform product and program design and to contribute to reports and publications for both technical and general audiences
  • Support dissemination of research findings to practitioners, developers, and researchers
  • Manage teams, including consultants and external partners, to complete research tasks
  • Contribute to research proposals for philanthropic funders, private clients, and/or government granting agencies


  • Ph.D. in an appropriate Learning Sciences or Education Research field
  • 3+ years leading research and evaluation projects from conception to publication
  • 3+ years of experience as a K-12 educator and/or education leader
  • Exceptional communication skills; proven ability to communicate with practitioners and technology developer partners about research projects
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and to manage competing tasks, deadlines, requirements, and decisions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • A passion for education, a team mentality, creativity, and a positive “can-do” “yes-and” spirit
