Deputy Director, Data Analytics and Infrastructure

Foundation for California Community Colleges - Remote - Full time

The California College Guidance Initiative (CCGI) is a statewide effort to help all systems - K-12 districts, California Community Colleges, California State University, University of California, and the California Student Aid Commission - work together to create seamless transitions and pipelines for students.

Through, the State of California’s official college and career planning platform, we offer a unique suite of college, career and financial aid planning information, curricula, and tools. From exploring potential career paths to launching and tracking college and financial aid applications, helps students discover their college and career goals, make plans for how to achieve them, and launch into careers consistent with their values, skills, and interests.

Students’ accounts on are populated with their high school transcript data, which is shared with higher education and financial aid providers at the point of application. To ensure that data is as accurate as possible, CCGI staff work hand-in-hand with our K-12 partners to clarify data standards, identify data conflicts, and implement routines that improve data quality so that the data reflected in their accounts can be used by the institutions that receive it, to inform decisions about admissions, course placement, guidance and financial aid. By providing ongoing support, training, and professional development opportunities, we help ensure that educators can integrate these planning and application tools into guidance interventions and instructional time.

CCGI currently serves one out of five California students and is slated for statewide scaling in the coming years.

CCGI is housed at the Foundation for California Community Colleges. Please note that all CCGI jobs are fully and permanently remote. All candidates must live in California.

The California College Guidance Initiative is looking for a seasoned data generalist with management experience to join the Data and Analytics Infrastructure Team. As part of the Data and Analytics Infrastructure Team, you will be a key strategic thinker, aiding in the expansion, refinement, and continued development of CCGI’s infrastructure utilizing Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as continuing to build out our data analytics and engineering tools. This role will be instrumental in helping us scale our work statewide and open the door for expanded use of California's official college and career planning platform for K-12th grade students, parents, and educators,

The ideal candidate for this team is an adept and autonomous project manager familiar with the Scrum methodology and has worked at the manager level in a data analytics or data engineering role. They have extensive experience in one or both of the following: 1) building out complex data architectures, including the testing, maintenance, and refinement of data pipelines AND/OR 2) Use of user-centered design principles to create actionable data products that quickly and concisely surface novel insights, making complex information understandable and accessible to a variety of internal and external stakeholders. This person is comfortable working with structured and unstructured data and can work with data using a variety of tools (SQL, Python, AWS, various ETL/ELT tools, Tableau, etc.). Additionally, this person has had extensive experience developing robust data documentation and data governance protocols.

You will directly manage one Data Engineer or Data Analyst, depending upon experience and expertise. The ideal candidate is as committed to bolstering their engineering and analytical chops as they are strengthening their people management and leadership skills. Additionally, you must be able to proactively and successfully partner and collaborate with other subject matter experts and team leaders on a project management basis.

We work to solve large scale, system-level problems. You must be comfortable project managing work with unknowns and ambiguous solutions, as well as passionate about promoting public education and advancing educational equity.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • With guidance from the Director of Data and Analytics Infrastructure, plans and prioritizes the team's weekly sprint cycles.
  • Collaborate with other Deputy Directors on the Technical Assistance and User Support Team, Team, Communications Team, as well as the Salesforce Administrator to plan and clarify data engineering and data analytics needs.
  • Lead meetings, research processes, collect data, analyze information and collaborate with the key internal stakeholders of your projects.
  • Based upon experience and expertise, perform either of the following:
    • Support and adhere to routines that aid in the development, refinement, and implementation of data engineering and infrastructure tools, including:
      • AWS microservices, Snowflake, Airflow, ELT/ETL tools, Python, SQL, and shell scripts and/or
    • Support and adhere to routines that aid in the development, refinement and maintenance of the internal analytics tools which include the following:
      • Tableau dashboards, external data reports, ad-hoc queries and analyses
  • Develop and maintain expert knowledge of
  • Continuously improve data pipelines, architecture, and analytics products by staying updated on industry trends and best practices.
  • Participate in CCGI’s people-manager workgroup, eagerly and prepared to actively grow management skills.

What Technical Skills Do You Need?

  • Expert SQL knowledge (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.) and understanding of relational databases, query authoring and optimization, as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
  • Advanced proficiency with scripting languages like Python, R, etc.
  • Advanced proficiency with ELT/ETL tools like Matillion, FiveTran, Talend, etc.
  • Advanced proficiency designing and developing well thought-out data products (data dashboards in Tableau, Power BI, etc) and analyses. Work product preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with project management software and tools (JIRA, Asana, Monday, Trello, etc...)
  • Familiarity with building and optimizing ‘big data’ pipelines, architectures, and data sets using a variety of tools: AWS, Snowflake, Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Professional experience implementing UX/UI principles and best practices to data visualization builds.
  • Ability to conceptualize clear ways of visualizing data that tells the stories and provide insights in clear and concise ways.
  • Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • A critical thinker who can independently and collaboratively solve problems.

More about the Data and Analytics Infrastructure Team

The team oversees all of CCGI’s internal cloud-based data analytics and engineering infrastructure and technical strategy. This includes data analytics, data warehousing, and data engineering projects, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and goals.
