The Great Oaks (GO) Foundation is a non-profit organization with the mission of launching and supporting a network of 6-12th grade charter schools that prepare students for postsecondary success through high-dosage tutoring coupled with outstanding classroom instruction. A critical component of the Great Oaks model is individualized instruction based use of a high-dosage tutoring model. Tutoring is provided by the Great Oaks Tutors Corps, a group of recent college graduates who dedicate a year of service providing daily tutoring to every student.

The Great Oaks Foundation has successfully replicated this program in Newark, NJ, Bridgeport, CT, New York, NY and Wilmington, DE. The Great Oaks Foundation currently manages three schools in Bridgeport, CT, New York, NY, and Wilmington, DE and serves approximately 1,200 students.

Great Oaks Charter Schools has been selected to be part of the inaugural cohort of Data Viz Starter Pack, a project championed forward by InnovateEDU. We have also been named a pilot district of Landing Zone, a Michael and Susan Dell Foundation funded Ed-Fi Alliance project aimed at leveraging the work around data interoperability to connect multiple sources of data through a managed ODS. The Data Analyst will lead the network in building out our data infrastructure, governance, and visual analytic strategy. The Data Analyst will be an integral part of realizing our goal to develop an integrated data system that seamlessly and securely connects our educational data in order to generate powerful analytics and visuals so that educators at every level of the Great Oaks organization can make data-driven decisions to improve student outcomes. This position reports to the National Director of Data Systems and Strategy.

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Owning management of data infrastructure established through Data Viz Starter Pack and working directly with their team to continue building out systems and structures for the ETL process
  • Designing student, teacher, and leader facing portals that enable information from various sources to be customized depending on user
  • Working closely with all levels of school-based staff and network management to implement a data governance strategy for improving quality and accuracy of data
  • Developing, maintaining, and iterating on data dashboards (built through Google Data Studio)
  • Preparing customized analytics and reports for board meetings, grant applications, and other mandated sources
  • Supporting the implementation of Clever to roster and manage connected applications in order to export reliable data
  • Serving as the Point of Contact for our eSchool Plus and PowerSchool Student Information Systems
  • Participating in network-wide learning communities and national Data Viz community focused on improving data infrastructure and governance
  • Coordinate the data and study of Fellow impact with the Columbia Center for Public Research and Leadership.
  • Utilize the student data systems to support that research and grants reporting.
  • Assisting with other projects related to data reporting, grants, technology, etc.

Competencies and Qualifications

The successful candidate will have proven success in:

  • Knowledge of and experience with databases (SQL) and programming (e.g. Python, ETL frameworks, Google Apps Scripts, etc.)
  • Expert ability to analyze datasets using Excel or Google Sheets functions
  • Working knowledge of visualization platforms (e.g. Google Data Studio, Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, etc.)
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to problem solve technical challenges associated with data and technology systems
  • Adept at analysis, report writing and presenting findings
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and effectively prioritize tasks to deliver results by given deadline
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with school leaders and school-based points of contact, as well as data project partners and vendors

  • Be efficient and organized
  • Have a do-whatever-it-takes attitude including a willingness to work occasionally on the weekend or in the evening
  • Possess an exceptional ability to respond well to feedback and implement it immediately
  • Be comfortable with a dynamic, fast-paced environment of rapid change and evolvement
  • Be willing to travel up to 25% of time to Bridgeport, CT, Wilmington, DE and New York City school sites
