Curriculum Developer

Girls Who Code - New York - Full time

The GWC Curriculum Team is searching for a passionate and curious Curriculum Developer to help us build curricula that inspires girls to change the world. In this role, you will be responsible for leading and supporting the development of high-impact, project-based curricula that incite a real passion for computer science, prepare students for a career in technology, and can scale to meet the needs of thousands of girls nationwide.

You will report to the Director of Curriculum and will work in close partnership with the Program Implementation, Research, Product, and Programs teams. This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the curricular changes, refinements, and testing for Girls Who Code educational offerings and cross-organizational initiatives.
  • Writing and designing new modules and tutorials to expand the breadth and depth of computer science learning in GWC programs.
  • Developing educational components for pilots and new programmatic offerings to serve new demographics.
  • Participating in the Curriculum Team’s development and review cycle on internal projects and external partner projects by writing, reviewing team member’s work, providing feedback, reconciling feedback from others, and publishing final content.
  • Collaborating with the Program Implementation and Research teams to collect feedback from users and use that data to drive curriculum updates and changes.
  • Supporting the Summer Immersion Program (SIP) Teacher Training in May and June by providing feedback on and reviewing training materials, attending the training(s), and potentially leading or co-leading training break-out sessions.
  • Observing GWC programs in action and using your observations to inform your curriculum development practices by visiting Club, Summer Immersion Program, and/or Alumni College Loop classrooms.
  • Participating in local and national Computer Science Education events and sharing Girls Who Code’s insights and best practices with external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Believe that all girls can code, and be excited to work to close the gender gap in tech.
  • Have 1-3 years of applicable experience, which may include teaching young people, writing technical curriculum, or working in engineering roles.
  • Be a strong writer who can craft engaging, age-appropriate prose for students, teachers, and volunteers.
  • Be able to learn new systems, tools, and technologies quickly in order to build curriculum.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Embrace challenges and adopt new responsibilities with creativity, initiative, and self-direction.
  • Have strong project management skills, including tools to work with a distributed team.
  • Be an intellectually curious and responsive team contributor, delivering and receiving feedback regularly, and eager to learn and stay up to date on computer science education.
  • Demonstrate comfort with adjusting work to evolving priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Be familiar with at least one programming language (for example: Scratch, HTML/CSS, Python, Swift, Arduino-C, Quorum, or JavaScript).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hold a degree in a Science Technology Engineering Math or Education fields, or have commensurate or demonstrable experience in STEM.
  • Demonstrate an active interest in computer science education, including an understanding of current and future trends, methodologies, and technologies to engage students effectively.
  • Come with first-hand experience working with students from any level, elementary through college-aged from diverse racial, economic, and geographic backgrounds.
  • Have familiarity with Understanding by Design, Universal Design for Learning, and/or Agile Development Methodologies.
  • Are proficient in one or more programming languages (for example: Scratch, HTML/CSS, Python, Swift, Arduino-C, Quorum, or JavaScript).
