With Turnaround’s assistance, schools learn how to help their students develop the social, emotional and cognitive skills and mindsets they need to succeed in school and life.

Informed by 16 years of practical experience in schools, Turnaround has grown into a leader in the field of whole child development, with an annual budget of $10.9M. Today, the organization is experiencing unprecedented demand for its applied science professional development and consulting services.

During the 2018-19 school year, Turnaround has partnerships with 20 schools in New York City, Washington D.C. and California. Turnaround’s tools and strategies will impact approximately 50,000 students and more than 4,000 educators through its school partnerships and hands-on professional support, coaching and training provided to District of Columbia Public Schools, the KIPP DC and Summit Public Schools charter networks and Relay Graduate School of Education.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Curriculum Developer will report to the lead Curriculum Design Specialist and is responsible for supporting the planning, writing, and development of content and tools focused on building schools’ capacity to support students’ social, emotional, and cognitive skills. Curriculum production will include the development of overviews, tables, charts, rubrics, student profiles, lesson plans, graphic organizers, sample completed work at different grade levels, questionnaires, templates and other related tools. Additionally, the Curriculum Developer will be responsible for obtaining intellectual property permissions for any adapted materials. The Curriculum Developer will have regularly scheduled check-ins with the lead Curriculum Design Specialist.

This position is available immediately through April 30, 2019, to support the overhaul of Turnaround’s curricular content in advance of school year 19/20. The Curriculum Developer can expect approximately 20-30 hours of work per week, all of which can be completed remotely. Compensation is competitive and is based on experience.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WOULD…

Demonstrate the ability to be a self-starter with the capacity to work efficiently on tight timelines

Be detail-oriented (with the capacity to see the big picture)

Have experience working with children and schools

Demonstrate exemplary writing and research skills, ideally in a curriculum development context

Have experience with the Microsoft Office suite, including the ability to create basic graphics

Engage as a constant learner who asks thoughtful questions to achieve clarity

Have knowledge of emerging practices and research related to social-emotional learning

Be coachable

Have extensive experience with curriculum development and writing (minimum of 3 years)

Have a social work background or teaching experience

Have a strong commitment to the work and mission of Turnaround for Children and an understanding of the experience of working in urban, low-income communities and schools is essential

Have strong research and analysis skills using various methods and sources such as databases, academic references, survey and evaluation tools, etc.

Have the ability to operate within a defined system or model, yet demonstrate appropriate problem-solving skills and creativity

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Social Work, Education or related field preferred
