Contra Costa School of Performing Arts, Principal

Contra Costa School of Performing Arts - Walnut Creek, California - Full time

ORGANIZATION

Contra Costa School of Performing Arts (CCSPA) is a public charter school serving approximately 450 youth (growing to 750 in the next few years) in grades 6-12 in Contra Costa County (East of San Francisco). The school’s mission is to give students a pre-professional experience in performing and visual arts within a college and career preparatory setting. It believes in fostering a culture of excellence with the core values of rigor, relevance and relationships. Students utilize the Summit Learning PLP tool as they take courses aligned to the full A-G (four year college eligible) curriculum while also spending a couple of hours a day focusing on their arts “major.” Arts focus areas include theatre, production design, instrumental music, vocal arts and dance. OPPORTUNITY

As CCSPA’s staff and community go through the WASC accreditation process this year and prepare for the submission of their first five year charter renewal petition in 2020, they are looking ahead to moving from the start-up stage to building a sustainable, enduring institution. A key element to the success of these goals is hiring a principal who can: oversee the implementation of CCSPA’s instructional and artistic programs; find, retain and develop high-quality faculty and staff; ensure the student services and special education teams have the resources they need to be effective in supporting students; and ensure that all members of the school community feel a sense of respect and belonging. This individual will report to the Executive Director and manages other members of the senior leadership team.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced school leader who is passionate about the arts and has a track record of ensuring strong academic performance for their students in a diverse school environment. They will be skilled at forming and maintaining relationships with a broad range of individuals and across areas of difference like cultural background, linguistic heritage, race, class, socio-economic status and family structure. They will be able to balance the urgency of problem solving in the moment with the need to establish enduring systems so the school can run efficiently over the long-term. They will be an exceptional people manager who inspires those who work for them, helping identify their areas of growth and opportunities to support them in their professional development. Experience in artistic endeavors is a strongly desired characteristic as well.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Principal will be in charge of the day-to-day management of CCSPA, including:

  • Improving the school’s academic programs and serving as the “Educator in Chief” by working with teachers to set instructional goals and priorities (and metrics for their measurement);
  • Ensuring the school maintains its arts-focus and the high quality of its arts programs, giving teachers and leaders in those departments the resources they need to be successful;
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with all school stakeholders (students, faculty/staff, parents, board members), ensuring transparent lines of communication at all times and addressing issues and concerns in a timely and constructive manner;
  • Ensuring that all teachers and staff have clear lines of communication to and from the administrative team, that everyone understands who their supervisor is and is receiving regular feedback, support, and evaluation of their progress and areas for development;
  • Building student support systems that provide adequate services to meet students’ academic and social emotional needs and those related to school safety, including developing and staffing these functions appropriately and measuring results to ensure their effectiveness.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to meet their responsibilities, the ideal Principal candidate will be:

  • A proven instructional leader with experience running a high performing school and with a working knowledge of arts and arts education programs;
  • A seasoned professional and experienced manager who knows how to recruit, coach, and develop teachers and staff at all levels;
  • An exceptional relationship builder who can quickly gain the confidence of the Executive Director, parents, faculty/staff, and students;
  • A passionate advocate for all students and families who has a commitment to building a strong culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at CCSPA;
  • Knowledgeable about the academic and social emotional needs of students, especially those of different racial, linguistic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
  • Dynamic and versatile, able to engage a variety of stakeholders in dialogue and speak in a clear, compelling and authentic manner both about the school’s goals and priorities and the leader’s decision-making process and plans towards meeting them;
  • Bachelor’s degree required; CA administrator credential preferred.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

CCSPA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package with a salary range of $110-135,000 annually. More details can be provided upon request.
