Content Strategist

The Role

At Capstone, the Content Strategy team shapes the content strategy for all of Capstone’s products. The Content Strategist is a strategic role that works closely, sales, marketing, and customers to understand the market, dreams up cool new content ideas, and works with the development teams to bring those ideas to life. We’re looking for someone with deep creativity and curiosity amplified by business savvy. You’ll be responsible for innovation, imagination, business analysis, and getting sales and marketing excited about what Capstone will do next.

This role requires experience in children’s publishing or media, product management, or other related areas. Experience in fiction development and/or licensing is preferred.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Content & Product Management

  • Ideate new content for Capstone’s books and other products. Curate an ongoing list of viable concepts that lead to a robust product plan; review product lines, and vet and proposed product concepts.
  • Refine publishing lists by backing ideas up with market research. Follow and understand education standards and trends, watch consumer trends, analyze competitive product, understand licensor roadmaps and partnership contractual needs, and track market needs and drivers in order to create books and other content that delight readers and meet educator needs.
  • Outline content scope, product positioning, and market requirements to the development teams. Create initial metadata for assigned product lines.

Collaboration

  • Work cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, and Content teams to refine concepts and develop product.
  • Lead brainstorming meetings with internal staff to capture product concept inputs.
  • Lead focus groups or advisory boards to elicit feedback from customers and readers that inform content development.
  • Partner with Sales & Marketing in product training presentations.

Licensing

  • Create and maintain 3-year product roadmaps for licensing partners, including revenue forecasts as required by partners. Prepare & edit business cases for new and existing licensing partnerships.
  • Build content strategies that meet current and new licensing partner needs.
  • Regularly communicate with internal and external licensing partners about reviews and product concepts.

Education, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Product Marketing or related area
  • Experience in children’s publishing content and educational products; ability to research and analyze the market.
  • Strong knowledge of competitors, trends, and licensor/licensee relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills including via teleconference (Zoom and similar) and by phone; able to and comfortable with interacting with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite, Smartsheet, Biblio3 or other title management software preferred
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to react to change and new opportunities quickly while multi-tasking. Can continuously organize, handle logistics, and consistently meet deadlines.

Travel Requirements

Work will be via teleconference (Zoom and similar) initially, but up to 10% travel may be required in the future.
