Computer Science Specialist

San Francisco Unified School District - San Francisco, CA - Full time


The position of Computer Science Specialist (a teacher on special assignment role) is designed to provide a diverse array of services and activities guided by the SFUSD Mission and Goals that: (1) support the implementation of a district-wide computer science curriculum, (2) work with teachers and leaders to determine how computer science can be implemented in a manner that reinforces SFUSD’s commitment to equity, and (3) support a range of professional activities for teachers of computer science.

The primary job of the Computer Science Specialist will be teaching elementary and/or middle grades computer science classes at multiple school sites as itinerant teacher.

Additionally, the job includes, but is not limited to:

  • Supporting the development and revision of a district PK-12 computer science curriculum;
  • Leading or supporting professional development for computer science educators;
  • Modeling effective instructional practices;
  • Acting as co-planner, co-teacher and/or co-assessor, with colleagues;
  • Serving as observer, and subsequently, as provider of constructive critique of practice;
  • Supporting computer science instruction so that success cannot be predicted by race, gender, socio-economic status, and other demographic factors; and
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

This is a pool position, and there are multiple roles available for the 2017-18 school year.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a valid California teaching credential;
  • Three years of professional teaching experience;
  • Awareness and experience in integrating technology into the classroom;
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of instructional strategies to engage students in learning, including scaffolding instruction for English language learners and special populations;
  • Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • A disposition towards continuous learning and collaboration with peers.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong content knowledge of computer science and the ability to apply it to teaching and learning;
  • Five or more years of professional teaching experience;
  • Experience in developing curriculum;
  • Experience as a coach, mentor teacher, or content specialist;
  • Experience in successful facilitation of professional development among administrators, whole school staffs, teacher leader meetings, and with community partnerships;
  • Ability to address access and equity issues with a variety of individuals and groups; and
  • Bilingual/biliterate.
