College Counselor

Alpha is seeking an entrepreneurial College Counselor who will thrive in a dynamic startup environment. Alpha: Cindy Avitia High School opened in 2015 and we are looking for a College Counselor to develop and run a successful college readiness program for our first cohort of seniors. The College Counselor will effectively advise and collaborate with all students and families in adequately preparing for college/post-secondary options and through the application. The 2016-2017 school year is the planning year for the incoming College Counselor. The person in this role will help with some school leadership responsibilities in addition to building out a college readiness program.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • P.P.S. Credential or Master’s Degree in School Counseling or other related advanced degree preferred
  • Experience in a K-12 environment or college advising preferred
  • Spanish proficiency preferred


Program Development

  • Create a four-year College Advising playbook
  • Develop a plan for academic advising to ensure all students are on track to be UC eligible
  • Create a calendar of events for all key program deliverables and activities
  • Create a test prep plan and schedule to include all key testing activities (SAT + AP)

College + Career Advising

  • Advise students around creation of college lists and best fit options
  • Establish educational and career plans for students
  • Support students through the application process including but not limited to the CSU, UC and Common Application systems
  • Guide students with vocational interests through research and the application process
  • Advise students in the scholarship process
  • Create and facilitate workshops on financial literacy and other college readiness workshops across all grade levels (9-12)
  • Help plan and facilitate visits from college admissions representatives
  • Plan, organize and facilitate all college tours
  • Print transcripts as necessary and send final senior transcripts to colleges/universities
  • Provide academic interventions as needed and facilitate opportunities for credit recovery
  • Update UC course list, annually, submit new courses as needed and collaborate with Academic Team
  • Develop academic plans for students to meet graduation and college requirements
  • Create and manage partnership with test prep providers and fee waivers (SAT + AP)
  • Counsel students to help them overcome personal, social and academic obstacles
  • Support a visual college presence on campus
  • Consult with Principal and Senior Director of Academics in evaluating course selections for curriculum development. Schedule students in appropriate courses

Student + Family Relationship Management

  • Create an annual family engagement plan related to college counseling and collaborate with Parent Center Manager
  • Serve as an advocate for students at the school and college/university admissions offices
  • Host several family events throughout the school year to build a strong college going culture
  • Counsels students and parents on college planning, including admission standards, entrance exams, course selection, financial aid and scholarships
  • Create and facilitate workshops geared toward families around college preparation process (a-g requirements, college application process, etc)
  • Connect students to resources within the community as appropriate
  • Facilitate parent, student, teacher conferences as needed

Data Management

  • Create systems and structures to capture key data:
    • Identify trends and implement program changes and improvements
    • Systematic monitoring of student’s academic progress towards graduation and college acceptance
    • Create personalized learning plans for each student based on SAT/ACT data
  • Monitor student’s progress toward graduation and help high school students prepare four-year educational plans consistent with their goals
  • Regular reporting on college acceptance and readiness indicators
  • Report structure to share student progress with the principal and school leadership team
