ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

CityBridge Education’s vision is for the nation’s capital to be the first city-level proof point for an excellent, equitable education system. A Washington, DC-based nonprofit, CityBridge incubates the people, ideas, and conversations needed for equity-centered innovation in DC’s public schools and social enterprises. We do this by identifying talented leaders and school designers who can solve the educational needs and challenges of DC families, deploying particular effort to recruiting leaders of color. We then incubate and invest in the best of their ideas and, together, bring to market the next generation of transformational public schools and education ventures.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) serves as the senior finance executive for CityBridge and oversees all business procedures and practices. Over the last four years, CityBridge’s annual budget has grown from $4M to $11M and has diversified its funding streams considerably. In this role, you are directly responsible for the organization’s budgeting, compliance, and administrative functions, and you provide the financial forecasting necessary to ensure the organization is maximizing its impact while maintaining its long-term fiscal sustainability. You also lead CityBridge’s technical staff to design and implement systems that maximize the efficacy of our internal operations, including the use of accounting/billing and knowledge capture software. As a member of the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams, you will work relentlessly to ensure the efficacy and efficiency of our business operations, and as a colleague at CityBridge, you will actively steward our brand, our standard of excellence, and commitment to equity in all that you do.

The Chief Operating Officer reports to the Chief Executive Officer. This is a full-time, DC-based position and requires living in the Metropolitan DC area and working in-person at our office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Preferred start date is March 2023, and we expect the COO to commit to at least three years at CityBridge.

YOUR LEGACY

You will play a significant role at CityBridge through the following:

1. Financial Acumen (40%)

You are responsible for prioritizing CityBridge’s fiscal health and sustainability. You are the organizational expert on all financial systems, including cash flows, payroll, and external contracting. You oversee our audit processes and manage the construction and oversight of our annual budget. You provide the Senior Leadership Team and the CityBridge Board of Directors with accurate, detailed financial summaries which include data-informed recommendations and forecasts.

2. Systems Building and Integration (30%)

You oversee, connect, design, and implement financial and information systems and processes within the organization. As head of CityBridge's internal shared services, you ensure all operational processes are integrated, reflect our organizational values and norms, and meet the needs of both our business functions and our stakeholders. You lead an internal team which currently includes the finance, talent and culture, and business operations functions and manage relationships with external accounting partners and assorted vendors. You track compliance of existing programs and foresee compliance risks for future endeavors. You also periodically lead organization-wide staff trainings on key finance, compliance, and information capture processes.

3Strategic Leadership (20%)

As a key member of both the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams, you are responsible for bringing the financial and operational lens to key enterprise decisions re: programming, staffing, and engagement with external partners. You demonstrate appropriate knowledge of our incubation programming and network engagement priorities, such that you can serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO and leaders across the organization on matters that do not squarely fit within the finance or operational functions.

YOU WILL EXCEL IF YOU HAVE:

  • 10+ years of experience in financial and/or operational leadership, with at least 2 years as a financial analyst or equivalent required
  • Ability to create clear, compelling financial reports adapted to a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrated track record of successfully designing and implementing internal processes and procedures
  • Understanding of nonprofit financial structures; experience stewarding public grants preferred
  • Project management skills and ability to prioritize issues strategically and organize time effectively
  • Capacity for quantitative and qualitative analysis, drawing on data from multiple sources to generate insights
  • Commitment to creating a sense of belonging by overcoming practices that exclude and diminish people based on their identity, particularly their racial identity; people management experience required
  • Accurate sense of strengths and growth areas and capacity for responding effectively to feedback
  • Comfort with ambiguity and change; desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

CityBridge has a mandatory vaccination policy with the requirement that all employees have completed a COVID-19 vaccine primary series unless they qualify for an exemption based on a medical condition, sincere religious beliefs, or other categories protected by applicable federal, state and local law.

TOTAL REWARDS PACKAGE

The starting salary range for this position is $175,000-240,000 commensurate with experience, and we offer a comprehensive benefits package including health (medical, dental, vision) insurance and 401(k) matching.
