We are looking for an experienced operations professional and seasoned manager seeking a leadership role in a rapidly growing startup. The Spike Lab (TSL) is an education company that runs a youth entrepreneurship program that helps students launch a “Spike,” a multi-year project uncommon among teens, based on genuine passion and a deep sense of purpose. The Chief of Staff will play a key role in expanding The Spike Lab’s footprint across Asia and the United States, designing the org structure, engineering scalable processes & systems, providing strategic counsel and tactical support to the company founders (CEO and CEdO), assuming responsibility for important day-to-day projects, and nurturing cross-organizational relationships as we grow. Our student demand is at an inflection point which has created the need for TSL to hire someone to lead our operations to support rapid organizational growth.

We are looking for someone who is excited to help build and manage the intricate organizational processes and systems that enable The Spike Lab to scale quickly. This is also someone who is extremely detail-oriented, organized, tech-savvy and a meticulous planner. Most importantly, it’s someone who is demonstrably committed to education and passionate more specifically about TSL’s mission: developing purpose-driven innovators for life. You will have the opportunity to work with a uniquely global and diverse team with deep entrepreneurship, business, and education experience -- all alumni from top US universities like Stanford, Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Michigan, Williams, Pomona and Georgetown.

What you’ll be doing

  • Domain ownership of all internal company systems and processes, infrastructure and coaching platforms, including HR, AR/AP and student curriculum libraries. This includes design and maintenance of all organizational systems and processes.
  • Leading recruiting, interviewing and onboarding of new coaches and employees.
  • Responsible for payroll, legal compliance, contract creation and vendor management.
  • Strategic counsel and tactical support to CEO and CEdO including fundraising, budgeting, meeting scheduling, trip planning, small research projects, and other miscellaneous tasks.
  • Head of Performance Management for the company and staff. Owner of company key performance metrics. Track and present key metrics at weekly staff meetings, and create and maintain dashboards for monthly, quarterly and annual business reviews.
  • General support to CMO to execute on marketing responsibilities including content creation, social media management, website management, SEO and more. Includes managing copy-writers, illustrators, translators, social media experts and other contractual support including other marketing agencies.
  • Responsible for researching and organizing attendance at external conferences and speaking opportunities for PR and sales purposes.
  • Responsible for student on/off-boarding and administrative and payment-related matters.
  • Direct translation, translator management, copy-writing and copy-editing in Mandarin of marketing content.

What we’re looking for

  • Minimum 5 years experience in management and operational roles
  • Minimum 2 years experience working at a predominantly English speaking company
  • Ambition to become company COO within 1-2 years
  • Experience within a company transitioning from startup stage to growth stage
  • Fluent in English and preferably also Mandarin
  • Strengths: Systems design, modeling, Planning, Organization, Executive Function, People Management, Communications, Copy-writing, Interpersonal Relations, Data Analytics & Reporting, Software Management, and Legal Contracts & Compliance
  • Passion for Education & the TSL mission

Job Details

  • Located in Taipei (or willing to move)
  • $55,000 annual base (cost of living 58% less expensive in Taipei) + bonus
  • Periodic travel in Asia is likely but not required.
  • Paid Flights to New York City (Quarterly)
  • Required to work evenings 3 days per week (i.e. 9-11pm) to support the CEO and CMO who are NYC-based. However, great flexibility in managing your schedule and paid time off.
  • Working alongside co-founder and CEdO in the Taipei office.
  • Leadership position and title.
