Position Overview 

The Chief External Affairs Officer will join the team at KIPP Bay Area Schools during an exciting phase of growth and organizational development. This is a senior leadership role that will oversee our Marketing & Communications, Partnerships, and Development departments, ensuring that we create and maintain key relationships with stakeholders, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, garner resources in pursuit of our mission, and steward our brand thoughtfully. The Chief External Affairs Officer will report to the CEO and work from our downtown Oakland offices, with frequent travel to our schools and local communities throughout the Bay Area. The role is available immediately.

Qualifications & Required Skills 

The ideal candidate for this position will have a deep passion for social justice and educational equity for all children, extensive executive leadership and relationship-building skills, and strengths in cultural competence, strategic communication, problem solving, and team development. The individual will have a history of collaborating with diverse groups of internal and external stakeholders to develop impactful partnerships and achieve ambitious outcomes. Additionally, successful candidates will bring experience closing significant negotiations/solicitations on behalf of an organization. H/she will be energized by building relationships and enlisting supporters to the mission of KIPP Bay Area Schools; telling the KIPP story by elevating parent, student, and staff stories; and highly skilled at communications and public relations.


  • Marketing & Communications: Ensure successful implementation of long-term approach for strategic communications, messaging and marketing materials differentiated by audience (e.g., prospective families, teachers, donors, alumni). Implement expanded internal communications strategy. Oversee brand positioning, crisis communications and public relations. Ensure KIPP is represented accurately, with integrity and optimal impact across diverse audiences.
  • Development: Facilitate the success of our ambitious multi-year growth campaign, in partnership with Director of Development and Board of Directors. Oversee best-in-class fund development operation that drives donor cultivation, solicitations, and stewardship for a breadth of individual and institutional donors. Ensure effective fundraising strategy, participate in solicitations and manage portfolio of major donors/funders.
  • Partnerships: Ensure the success of our long-term partnerships strategy to benefit our students, schools, and alumni. Oversee corporate engagement strategy and partnerships with youth-serving organizations to support career readiness initiatives, after-school programming, enrichment opportunities, and strong community ties. Identify and anticipate internal organizational needs and mobilize third-party partners to even more effectively support our students.
  • Team management and leadership: Serve as member of the Executive Team. Effectively manage and develop direct reports with an assets-based approach, cultivating a collaborative and inclusive team culture that seeks to coach and empower direct reports. Bring a proven track record of navigating complex issues, managing multiple stakeholders, making decisions, and driving strong results.

Education & Work Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Extensive track record of working collaboratively with external partners and Boards of Directors.
  • Experience managing staff and yielding demonstrated results. The ability to work across teams and with diverse leaders is essential.
  • Marketing, public relations, communications, business development, and/or fund development experience preferred.
