ORGANIZATION

Catalyst Academy Charter School is a new, public charter school in Pittsburgh, PA, set to open in the Fall of 2020. Catalyst Academy Charter School’s mission is to prepare all students for college, career, and life. The school aims to serve children in underserved East End communities that today lack quality neighborhood schools. By leveraging innovative practices common to some of the nation’s top-performing public schools, Catalyst Academy is ready to shatter the achievement gap for low-income students and students of color. In addition to rigorous college-preparatory academics, including daily science and engineering and extensive arts and physical education, the school will have an explicit focus on social-emotional learning and 21st-century skill development via project-based learning to connect students to real-world problems and to the organizations and professionals solving them.

OPPORTUNITY

Catalyst Academy Charter School is hiring a founding team of Kindergarten and First-Grade teachers who are excited and prepared for the challenges of building a high-performing, independent public charter school. Under the leadership and guidance of Catalyst’s founding Principal, Darren Gray, the founding team at Catalyst Academy will be responsible for establishing a strong culture for students and staff with an unwavering commitment to high academic achievement.

Catalyst is hiring for the following roles:

  • Founding General Education Teacher (Kindergarten)
  • Founding General Education Teacher (Grade 1)
  • Founding Inclusive Learning Teacher (Kindergarten)
  • Founding Inclusive Learning Teacher (Grade 1)
  • Founding STEM Teacher (Kindergarten and Grade 1)
  • Founding Arts Teacher (Kindergarten and Grade 1)
  • Founding Physical Education Teacher (Kindergarten and Grade 1)
  • Founding Dean of Instruction
  • Founding Director of Scholars
  • Founding Director of Inclusive Learning

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities of the Founding Teachers include:

Belong

  • Building deep relationships with students, families, and staff to foster a culture of joy and community. Maintaining strong lines of communication with families about student progress, and go above and beyond to support and collaborate closely with teammates in the united pursuit of Catalyst’s mission.
  • Having stamina and the ability to set and achieve ambitious goals, and handling the intensity required to bring your best self to a high-performing school environment where the stakes are high for kids.
  • Sharing feedback to solve problems, reflect on how your actions impact others, and take ownership over creating the staff culture you want to show up to each day.

Grow

  • Offering and receiving constructive feedback from colleagues in order to create a professional working atmosphere that aspires to excellence and is conducive to constant improvement; diving humbly into school-wide and individual professional development, including pre-service training over the summer and weekly sessions during the academic year.
  • Creating rigorous curriculum aligned to Catalyst’s academic model and Common Core Standards, doing the intellectual prep needed to deliver rigorous instruction, and developing and demonstrating genuine passion for your content area that is contagious to scholars.

Achieve

  • Ensuring that students are growing. Continually internalizing/planning lessons and analyzing data to push scholars to master rigorous content.
  • Dynamically leading students in whole-class and small-group settings, cultivating intellectual curiosity and a love of learning in scholars, and adjusting use of qualitative and quantitative data to ensure student understanding and meet differentiated student needs.
  • Developing, upholding, and implementing Catalyst’s values and systems to effectively manage a classroom, creating a consistent experience for scholars across the school, and leading students to meet sky-high academic and behavioral expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, ideal candidates for Catalyst’s founding team will have:

  • Prior experience teaching elementary school, experience teaching in a low-income community, or a demonstrated ability to raise achievement levels of traditionally underserved students, which is highly preferred;
  • A deep, demonstrated commitment to addressing historic inequity along lines of race and class;
  • A Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree is preferred;
  • A valid Pennsylvania teaching license, a teaching license that has been successfully transferred from another state that offers reciprocity, or demonstrated enrollment and progress towards completion of required certification while teaching full-time.
