OPPORTUNITY

With the departure of BCS’ founding leader Wanny Hersey (after 16 years), the board is seeking a new Superintendent/Executive Director to lead this 1,100 student public charter school. The BCS board is seeking an exceptional leader who knows how to set an inspiring vision for the school while maintaining the highest bar for academic excellence. This leader will also be skilled relationship builder with a depth of knowledge on how to sustain a culture of innovation and global citizenship. The ideal candidate will have a track record of success leading a high performing school program with experience building diverse teams and supporting teachers and staff in their professional growth. This person will also have demonstrated the ability to build trust and a strong working relationship with students, staff/faculty, parents, board members and external constituents like the local and county offices of education and other community members.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Superintendent/Executive Director will be in charge of the management of all aspects of the school, including:

  • Maintaining Bullis’ award-winning academic program, encouraging staff to be creative and try “out of the box” strategies to push students’ lifelong love of learning;
  • In concert with other stakeholders, leading the development of the strategic plan that lays out a framework for how to implement BCS’ mission in every classroom, every day;
  • Working closely with the Board, senior staff and site-based administrators to formalize that vision and ensure that each campus has the right amount of resources and support to run its program effectively;
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with all school stakeholders (students, faculty/staff, parents, board members), ensuring open lines of communication at all times and addressing issues and concerns in a timely and constructive manner;
  • Setting goals and metrics of measurement for student outcomes (related to academic performance, social emotional health, etc.) and leading administrators to manage their teams effectively such that these outcomes are met;
  • Ensuring that the school maintains student support systems that meet students’ academic and social emotional needs (including special education services) and those related to school safety, including developing and staffing these functions appropriately and measuring results to ensure their effectiveness;
  • Supervising front and back office staff, taking primary responsibility for the management of general operations for individual campuses and the network as a whole, including student record-keeping, contracts and compliance;
  • Overseeing finances for the organization including on-target projections for student and revenue, responsible fiscal planning/budget leadership and accurate reporting to the governing board and outside agencies;
  • Building strong connections with the relevant personnel at the local and county departments of education that interact with the school around facilities management and charter compliance;
  • Attracting, supporting and retaining exceptional educators while leading community initiatives to create a greater sense of equity and inclusion among all stakeholders;
  • Serving as the primary direct report of and liaison to the Board of Directors, working closely with them on all issues related to the school.

PRIORITIES

A successful first year in this role for the new Superintendent/Executive Director will include:

  • Developing and submitting BCS’ petition to renew its charter, which is due by the ‘21-22 school year.
  • Ensuring a smooth transition of all existing and new families and staff members to the ‘21-22 school year, maintaining a high level of student and staff retention.
  • Implementing strategic initiatives that the board has laid out from previous years and guide board- and community-level conversations around future strategic plans.

QUALIFICATIONS

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Superintendent/Executive Director candidate will be:

  • An accomplished executive with 15+ years of success in the education sector and a track record of working directly in schools to institute and maintain a program that features academic excellence and innovation;
  • Deeply committed to the Bullis mission and excited to lead this particular community, someone with a growth mindset, an innovator who is willing to take risks and will constantly strive for more than the status quo;
  • A culturally competent and self-reflective leader who has a global view, ideally speaking multiple languages, understanding the unique needs of a diverse, multi-cultural community, and with a commitment to equity and inclusion;
  • A builder of authentic relationships with internal and external audiences, able to engage with a variety of individuals and speaks in a clear and compelling manner about the organization’s goals and priorities;
  • Highly effective in managing senior leaders as well as overseeing the operations, finance, legal and HR sides of an organization;
  • A collaborative leader who is comfortable with a consensus-driven culture and is able to get others to follow their vision while also holding firm on what is needed to best serve students and the school community;
  • Focused and resilient, savvy on how to manage competing voices and priorities and navigate a politically challenging environment internally and externally;
  • A hard worker who strives for excellence, holding a high bar for themselves and others while being willing to coach, develop and motivate others to meet that bar.
