Board of Directors for ARISE High School in Oakland, CA

Board of Directors

ARISE High School - Oakland, CA - Part time

ARISE High School’s mission is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and agency to be leaders in Oakland. ARISE serves approximately 325 students in grades 9-12, and prepares students from low-income families to be the first to attend college. Currently 86% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch, 89% speak English as a Second Language, and 86% are first-generation college-bound. ARISE nurtures, trains, and disciplines its school community to engage in a continuous practice of developing mind, heart, and body towards a vision where students actively rise up. Agency and self-determination drive the school community’s struggle to improve existing material and social conditions towards a more healthy, equitable, and just society.

Individuals who are selected to join the board of ARISE will play an active role in ensuring that every aspect of the school is optimized to support this mission—from advising on strategy, to building community relationships, to driving academic growth, to raising funds for new programs. Members lead with other professionals from a wide range of fields, and use their knowledge and resources to address the school’s most pressing needs, provide fiduciary oversight, and ensure strong student outcomes.

Those who join the board at ARISE are expected to:

  • Commit approximately 10 hours per month to board work
  • Participate fully in the work of the board for the duration of the board term (2 years), including monthly board and committee meetings, school events, and an annual board retreat
  • Develop a deep understanding of the Fruitvale community and the students and families ARISE serves
  • Build trusting and collaborative relationships with the ARISE team
  • Actively contribute the skills, knowledge, network, and resources necessary to support the school’s success
  • Serve as an active external ambassador for ARISE and make an annual contribution that is personally significant
  • Exemplify ARISE’s values: respect, persevere, build and lead.

In order to make a significant positive impact on ARISE’s board, ideal candidates will have:

  • A passion for educational equity in the K-12 context
  • A track record of success over 7+ years of professional experience
  • Particular expertise in one or more relevant areas, especially in charter school leadership, curriculum and instruction, talent, external relations, community engagement, healthcare, and/or law
  • A collaborative and action-oriented outlook with strong communication skills
  • High standards for personal ethics and integrity
  • A meaningful connection to and/or knowledge of the Fruitvale community in Oakland
