The Innovative Schools team seeks an Associate Partner to join a fun, passionate and dedicated group of people. You will be a critical member of the team, focused on finding, funding and supporting a national portfolio of innovative new schools. Reporting to the Senior Managing Partner, you will be based in our office in Oakland, CA.

Your legacy at NewSchools will include: 

1. The design, outreach, and launch of the NewSchools Invent application process. You will: 

  • Refine the NewSchools Invent open application process  
  • Support the development and execution of communications, recruitment, and outreach strategies to create a robust, diverse, and high-quality application pool 
  • Build relationships with partner organizations to facilitate strong recruitment and diligence activities 
  • Serve as an external representative of NewSchools and field questions from prospective applicants 
  • Coordinate Diligence Process for Prospective Ventures 
  • Lead project management for due diligence efforts on all teams applying for a school planning or launch investment through our NewSchools Invent program 

2. A leadership role in conducting due diligence on prospective ventures’ school models, leadership and budgets to make investment decisions. You will:

  • Synthesize findings from due diligence efforts to summarize the team’s investment 
  • Capture lessons learned from the team decision making process and identify ways to improve diligence in the future 
  • Manage the grant development and execution process 

3. A contribution as a relationship manager to Innovative school leaders. You will:

  • Support 5-7 schools working to plan or launch new schools, who have a wide range of skills and needs 
  • Conduct a thorough needs assessment for all new ventures and execute our management assistance approach by providing relevant support to school leaders 
  • Surface lessons from the schools you’re supporting to inform our approach to selection and management assistance 


  • Passion for innovation and excellence in public education 
  • Effective project manager with attention to detail and ability to drive to completion 
  • Personal presence necessary to effectively support and influence our ventures and partners 
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, owning high-priority tasks and projects with minimal guidance and support 
  • Strong strategic thinking and analysis skills, ideally in a PK-12 setting; proficiency in financial modeling and financial statement analysis valued 
  • Proven ability to develop and present professional materials (e.g. spreadsheets, written memos, presentations) 
  • Ability to travel up to 33% for school visits, convenings and conferences 
  • Working style suited to a small-office setting with limited support staff, where teamwork and resourcefulness are highly valued      


  • Minimum 7 years of experience in PK-12 education with progressive levels of leadership and responsibility 
  • Ideal candidates would have experience as a principal, assistant principal or part of a school founding team
