Associate of Development and Communications

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for someone with a few years of experience under their belt who is eager to learn and grow their career in nonprofit communications and development.

The Associate/Sr. Associate of Development and Communications will report to the Sr. Manager of Communications and External Relations and to the Director of Development on the Central Office team, based in East Palo Alto. This new role will be split between development (70%) and communications (30%) and will work cross-collaboratively with team members at the East Palo Alto and Hayward program sites and the Central Office to tell our brand’s story and build our relationships with donors, partners, community members and friends of The Primary School. The Associate/Sr. Associate will be responsible for managing The Primary School’s CRM, drafting donor correspondence, managing our content calendar and external brand channels (social media, website, and email), and supporting development processes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications

  • Manage content calendar, working with Senior Manager of Communications to brainstorm content, post on social media channels, draft email campaigns, and write blogs
  • Manage public-facing website, including updating pages and writing blogs, and support school teams in updating family-facing websites
  • Work closely with East Palo Alto and Hayward school teams to capture and tell stories about students, staff, and parents, which could include taking photos/videos, interviewing staff/students/parents, and writing case studies
  • Provide support with writing and design projects and brand collateral development
  • Provide support to the Senior Manager of Communications & External Relations as needed

Development

  • Manage Salesforce for development work, including creating and running reports, creating and updating records, leads, opportunities, and beyond, and optimizing our team’s use of Salesforce
  • Draft grant applications, donor meeting briefings and/or donor email correspondence
  • Research donor prospects to determine potential alignment and interest in supporting The Primary School’s mission
  • Provide support for virtual and in-person events
  • Provide support to the Director of Development as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-4 years of work experience in communications, development, or marketing, preferably at a nonprofit
  • Excellent written communication skills with past experience drafting correspondence, blogs/articles, meeting briefings, and/or reports
  • Strong project and process management skills and the ability to balance multiple priorities
  • Experience managing branded social media channels
  • Experience making updates to websites, using platforms like Squarespace, Wordpress, or Wix
  • Superior attention to detail
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and excited to learn
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to learn new areas of knowledge quickly and thoroughly
  • Genuine interest in nonprofit communications and philanthropy
  • Belief in the mission of The Primary School and that all children and families are capable of extraordinary things

A plus if:

  • Understanding of donor gift cycles, prospect research and gift vehicles and processes
  • Familiarity with education landscape
  • Experience with Salesforce
  • Experience with Squarespace
  • Experience with prospect research, including NOZA and/or Foundation Center
  • Experience using Adobe Creative Suite tools
  • Familiarity with East Palo Alto and/or Hayward communities
  • Bilingual in Spanish
