Job-Specific Responsibilities

The Associate Director of Educational Technology, Media and Design (ETMD) oversees a growing portfolio of online learning programs for the Office for External Education (OEE) at Harvard Medical School, including Continuing Education, Certificate, Executive Education and Master’s programs. This position will lead the academic technology service line for OEE, providing strategic direction for the selection and implementation of new and innovative technologies supporting OEE’s educational activities, including synchronous live virtual courses, pre-recorded asynchronous content, webinars, content marketing and other evolving educational activities. The position will manage an integrated service team and report to the Executive Director of the Office for External Education to ensure a cohesive, consistent and collaborative approach to technology efforts across OEE.

Primary functions of this position:

  • Provides strategic leadership for the evolving service line of OEE learning technologies and digital media requirements.
  • Directs the planning, implementation, and project management for academic technology solutions, including learning management systems and tools and technologies to enhance online teaching and learning, optimize online content and design, and streamline business processes.
  • Manages all ETMD team leads and develops high-functioning, integrated service team. Collaborates with key business unit partners within OEE to understand evolving educational requirements, and to support key personnel within the business units (educational “liaisons”) and rapid transition to online learning.
  • Provides leadership across OEE to identify innovative platforms and applications for high- quality, cost-effective learning technology solutions.
  • Manages all vendor relationships within OEE and in collaboration with other HMS and University learning and technology leaders.
  • Provides direct instructional design support for key clients and during peak workload times.
  • Designs, manages, and provides training for academic technology resources to OEE faculty and staff as appropriate.
  • Builds strong and effective partnerships with HMX Creative Media team, HMS IT Teaching & Learning Technologies, HMS Faculty, the Office of the Vice President for Advances in Learning (VPAL) and other academic support organizations across HMS and the University.
  • As appropriate, serves on University and HMS Committees that are charged with evaluating and selecting academic technology tools.
  • Fosters a culture of continuous innovation by maintaining expertise in current and emerging technologies that support teaching and learning in higher education.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is required
  • Knowledge of effective use of learning technologies and digital media to enhance the teaching and learning environment
  • Experience working with online course delivery platforms is required

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Advanced degree preferred in the field of Technology, Innovation and Education.
  • Experience with design-first thinking, creative problem solving, and user story development
  • Excellent supervisory, organizational, and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Highly organized with business maturity, discretion, enthusiasm and a positive attitude
  • Demonstrate good problem-solving skills, ability to prioritize and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment
  • Medical and/or science background helpful but not required
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to motivate and manage staff
  • Essential competencies are: composure, time management, delegation, planning, drive for results, written communications, managing diversity, presentation skills, building effective teams, organizational agility, directing others, motivating others, dealing with ambiguity and a fast-paced deadline driven environment
