Assistant Principal - Middle School

BASIC FUNCTION:

Assists the Principal-Middle School with administrative duties involving student conduct, curriculum development and school plant operations as assigned; has the primary responsibility for student discipline.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Supervises and advises the Associated Student Body.E

Assists in planning, organizing, coordinating and participating in programs and activities related to the operation of a middle school including instruction, student discipline and special education programs; enforces applicable state and district codes, policies and laws; administers district and school site discipline policies and safety programs.E

Performs a variety of administrative duties to assist the principal in managing the schools.E

Assists in supervising and evaluating the performance of designated certificated and classified personnel; assigning of duties to faculty and staff as appropriate to meet school objectives; assists with recruiting, interviewing and selecting new faculty and staff.E

Assists in developing and administering disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; confers with students, parents, teachers and community agencies; responds to and resolves parent, student and staff complaints.E

Assists in establishing, coordinating and maintaining communication with community and parent groups; develops correspondence to promote school activities and achievements.E

Assists in providing direction to a variety of faculty, staff and student programs and services.E

Provides direction to the school’s guidance and counseling services, student activities, student government, school attendance issues and plant maintenance; assures programs and services meet established objectives and requirements.E

Assists in supervising and organizing student activities; extra-curricular activities and athletic events; schedules extra-curricular programs; attends a variety of school events including athletic events, dances, meetings, and others.E

Assists in directing the preparation and maintenance of a variety of district, county, state and federally-mandated records and reports regarding student attendance, discipline, attendance, test scores, cumulative records and academic achievement.E

Assists in coordinating parent volunteers and their assignment; oversees the selection of student aides and their assignments.E

Assists in the development of learning and resource centers.E

Performs related duties as assigned.

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS:

Proper California Administrative Credential.

Five (5) years of teaching experience, preferably at the middle school level.

Master’s Degree.

Demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities.

Meet district standards for physical and mental health.

Appearance, grooming, and personality that establish a desirable example.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

District health standards.

Comprehensive organization, activities, goals and objectives of a middle school.

School law administration and applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws.

Instructional standards and faculty requirements.

Board and district policies, procedures and regulations.

Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Oral and written communication skills.

ABILITY TO:

Meet District health standards.

Organize, coordinate and administer assigned programs and activities related to student discipline, attendance and instruction at the school.

Direct, evaluate and supervise assigned certificated and classified staff.

Direct activities regarding personnel, the physical plant, student services and activities, curriculum and instruction.

Prepare and deliver oral presentations.

Establish, coordinate and maintain communication with community and parent groups.

Assist with the implementation, evaluation and modification of instructional and categorical programs in accordance with applicable laws.

Plan and organize work.

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Exercise leadership in developing cooperation among staff members and in promoting morale.
