The Primary School is creating a new school model that brings together all of the adults in a child’s life, including parents, educators, and medical and mental health providers, starting from a very early age. We recognize the entrenched racism that exists within our public systems and the unjust impact this has had on families of color. Our aim is that children and families most impacted by systemic poverty and racism receive the multidisciplinary support they deserve to be well, learn, and thrive.

Long-term, we hope to create a game-changing school model that can be replicated across the country. As we continue to learn and grow, we plan to share what we’ve learned and pursue policy and systems change on a local, state, and national level. Our approach has three defining characteristics:

  • We start early. We start working with children as young as 8 months and provide full-time school starting at age three to reach them at a critical stage in development.
  • We partner with parents. We believe that when parents thrive, children thrive, so we support the wellness and growth of parents alongside the growth of their children.
  • We integrate services. Our unique model unites health care and education, building a multi-disciplinary team and holistic system of care around a child’s full needs.

In 2016, we opened our flagship school in East Palo Alto, California, with our first class of four year olds. We have grown to serve over 300 children and their families through a birth to three program, parent wellness program, full-day preschool, and elementary school, which will grow through eighth grade. In 2020, we began programming at our second site in Hayward, California.


We are opening our second site in Hayward in 2021 with a founding class of four-year-old children and families. During the first year of operation in Hayward, parents with toddlers will engage in programming focused on family well-being and preschool readiness. Parents will then be able to enroll in the preschool in the fall of 2021. Drawing on key learnings from our first site, core components of the model include partnering closely with parents throughout their child’s development and supporting parent wellness; coordinating early screening and developmental support and offering a full-day school starting with three-year-olds; and working with existing health care providers in the community to coordinate care for children.


The Assistant Teacher (Preschool) reports to the School Leader and is responsible for supporting Lead and Associate Teachers in developing and delivering engaging, comprehensive and integrated units across a student’s day. Assistant Teachers provide students with continuity and support, and leverage multiple modalities of learning to ensure that all children receive the small group and individual attention they need to maximize growth. Additionally, Assistant Teachers work across multiple classrooms in the same grade level and provide classroom teachers with coverage for prep time and lunch. Assistant Teachers also help to support classroom and school-wide systems (e.g., student pick-up, meal preparation) that allow The Primary School to provide students and families with a seamless and enriching day-long experience. Assistant Teachers receive coaching and feedback from the classroom teams with whom they work as well as the School Leader.


  • Build relationships and actively engage with all students across classrooms
  • Weekly instructional planning support as directed by Lead Teacher
  • Instructional delivery in small group and individualized formats as directed by Lead Teacher
  • Support regular assessment and analysis of quantitative and qualitative student data with the goal of tailoring responsive instruction and support
  • Collaboration with Classroom Teams to practice skills and jointly problem solve
  • Regular communication with and outreach to families.
  • Proactive collaboration and frequent engagement with The Primary School Parent Coaches and staff, and external health practitioners and partners
  • Active participation in the ongoing design and implementation of the The Primary School model through research, curriculum development, engagement with school and organizational leadership, and focused professional development

  • You love spending time with kids and kids love spending time with you
  • You have a high school degree or GED-equivalent and are in pursuit of a college degree
  • You have a minimum of 6 ECE units
  • You have experience working with students in a school or similarly structured environment - after-school program, summer camp, child care program or tutoring session, preferably serving Hayward or a community similar to the city of Hayward
  • You know that a great environment for children doesn’t just “happen” - it’s built with great care, preparation, practice and love. With or without “teacher” in your job title, you have always been the “teacher” - at home, at your job, with your family, in your community - and caring for and engaging children has been a consistent theme and/or area of interest in your life
  • You get that starting a new school and organization is no easy task and are not scared - in fact, you’re energized - by the idea of putting in the hours and deep commitment needed to bring The Primary School to life
  • You have a parent- and family-centered mindset
  • You recognize the multidimensional needs of children and families, because you’ve seen the intersection of education, health, and family support services in your own life
