The Assessment Designer supports learning and assessment design strategy through analyzing in-product assessment needs against internal curriculum and product design, national and state standards, state or district curriculum maps, state adoption requirements, RFPs, and other applications or requirements as needed. The Assessment Designer helps to research and develop Edmentum’s approach to formative and summative assessment practices and works directly with Learning Designers to ensure products follow a sound pedagogical approach that incorporates best practices in assessment and educational measurement.

The ideal candidate will have deep subject matter expertise in elementary mathematics (grades K-8) in both instructional pedagogy and assessment. The ideal candidate will be creative and resourceful and must be able to collaborate effectively within a team-oriented environment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support the company in achieving excellence in 3-12 mathematics learning and assessment design, making incremental improvements to current assessment practices and in conceptualizing future programs.
  • Work collaboratively within and across teams to design and develop assessments based on curriculum, research, and product requirements.
  • Support the Content Development team in creating math content by providing guidelines and best practices in assessment, writing task models, and reviewing key content.
  • Review internally produced assessments and perform quality assurance reviews of assessment items across all products.
  • Design and develop style and procedure guides to ensure consistency across assessments and products.
  • Evaluate validity evidence against assessment purpose and apply industry-standard methods to produce evidence of alignment and other technical qualities up to the levels required for federal peer review.
  • Present and communicate assessment design and development approach to external groups, such as curriculum, research, sales, services, and customers.
  • Research and report on state or national standards, curriculum maps, state adoptions, and/or assessment requirements.
  • Monitor contemporary issues, trends, and research in educational assessment and the assigned subject area in order to design and develop assessments based on customer needs and/or for future assessment products and services.
  • Meet all goals of quality, schedule, and budget.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, education, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in mathematics classroom teaching, curriculum development, and/or assessment design and development; assessment design and/or development experience required.
  • 2+ years of high-stakes assessment development experience including blueprint and psychometric interface experience
  • Deep subject matter expertise in 3-12 mathematics education; sensitive to the developmentally appropriate instruction and assessment of younger learners.
  • Highly creative with strong design and technical skills.
  • Experience using Universal Design for Learning and Evidenced-Centered Design approaches to assessment design and/or development.
  • Understanding of state summative assessment design; experience developing interim benchmark assessments assessments strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with measures of assessment reliability and validity; familiarity with basic psychometric theory including evaluating item quality based on psychometric performance.
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written, and business) to function effectively in a leadership role with internal and external clients and liaise with other national education experts.
  • High levels of collaboration and cross-functional skills and experience.
