ARISE High School is a public charter school serving 320 students in grades 9-12 in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood. Its mission is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and agency to be leaders in their community. The school provides a small school environment where every student has at least one adult who knows them well and supports them on their educational journey. ARISE is committed to building and maintaining healthy communities by providing families, many of which are first-generation college-bound, access to college and careers in Education, Community Social Services, Community Justice, Public Health, and Public Policy. 87% of the student population is low-income, 93% are Latinx and 86% are the first in their families to go to college. In recent years, more than 90% of ARISE’s 12th graders have been accepted to a four-year college.

The ARISE board is seeking an exceptional instructional leader who knows how to maintain a high bar for academic excellence while building and sustaining a positive school culture for students and adults. The ideal candidate will have a track record of success leading an innovative college preparatory program with experience building diverse teams and supporting teachers and staff in their professional growth. This person will also have demonstrated how they build trust and strong working relationships with students, staff/faculty, parents, board members, and external constituents. The successful Head of School candidate will believe in the ARISE High School mission, demonstrating a personal commitment to ensuring the school’s students have the opportunity to fulfill their goals for education and life.


Key Responsibilities of the Head of School include:

  • Inspiring instructional excellence with a deep understanding of how to foster a rigorous, engaging and supportive academic environment for students and an ability to inspire faculty to create this kind of climate in every classroom, every day;
  • Leading the vision for ARISE’s community success, including ensuring that its instructional program, staff and student culture, community engagement and external partnerships are tightly aligned to the school mission and goals;
  • Managing school leaders and other senior staff, acting not only as a supervisor but also as a coach and consensus builder, remaining deeply committed to ARISE’s values of developing and bringing out the strengths of all its people while also holding them accountable for their goals and community success;
  • Partnering with the Board of Directors and funders to secure and allocate the resources and supports necessary to maintain the health of the school organization, remaining solutions-oriented and proactively solving problems as they arise;
  • Encouraging students, faculty, families, and other partners to be their best selves every day, always keeping the community’s moral compass pointing in the right direction, and ensuring an unyielding focus at all times on what is best for ARISE’s scholars and their futures.


In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Head of School candidate will be:

  • A seasoned professional and experienced manager with 10+ years of professional experience who knows how to recruit, oversee, coach, and develop teachers and staff at all levels.
  • Committed to ARISE High School’s mission of empowering students with the knowledge, skills, and agency to be leaders in their community.
  • A proven instructional leader with experience running a high performing secondary school (experience with grades 9-12 preferred) who brings an understanding of how to support ARISE’s academic program while also bringing in the knowledge of best practices in education innovation.
  • An exceptional relationship builder who can quickly gain the confidence of all of ARISE’s stakeholders.
  • A passionate advocate for all students and families who has a commitment to building a strong culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at ARISE.
  • Experienced in school finance and decision-making around resource allocation for a student-serving organization (background working with public school budgeting preferred).
  • Knowledgeable about the academic and social-emotional needs of adolescents, particularly high school students, as they pursue their paths towards college and career.
  • Dynamic and versatile, able to engage a variety of stakeholders in dialogue and speak in a clear, compelling and authentic manner to all individuals invested in ARISE’s success.
  • Comfort in written and spoken Spanish strongly preferred.


This position offers a competitive salary range of $115,000-135,000 and robust benefits including medical, dental and retirement. More details can be provided upon request.
