AP Computer Science Principles Curriculum Writer - Independent Contractor

The AI Education Project - Remote - Part time

Work Type: Part-time, Contract (1099-Independent Contractor)

About Us

The AI Education Project (aiEDU) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to centering equity and accessibility in artificial intelligence (AI) education. Our mission is to create equitable educational experiences that excite and empower learners everywhere with AI literacy. Our offerings include a variety of free learning resources built for educators, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive as future workers, creators, consumers, and citizens.

Our team boasts a diverse and dynamic background in industry, education, curriculum design, marketing, policy, journalism, and more. We come together because we believe in the potential of the next generation to shape technology and our future for the better.

The Project

aiEDU is kicking off a new project to develop AI content that integrates into the AP Computer Science Principles (APCSP) curriculum. We firmly believe that all computer science students must develop core AI literacy skills. Our aim is to create beautiful, engaging, and effective curriculum that develops AI literacy with a sharp focus on addressing the needs of APCSP teachers and students. Your task is to develop innovative lessons that teach the fundamentals of AI literacy while deepening students’ understanding of the APCSP course content. You will have creative freedom in this role to design innovative lessons. Your work will be supported by aiEDU’s internal curriculum development guidelines for accessibility, engagement, and rigor, as well as our internal review process that minimizes feedback rounds.

This is a part-time, contract role that would last 3-5 months depending on availability, with the opportunity for additional contracts in the future. Compensation for this role is $75/hr.

We are a fully remote team working across time zones. As such, we expect contractors to be independent workers who communicate clearly and often. Outside of regular meetings with the project team, we strongly encourage contractors to work during the days and times that are convenient for them.

You will be expected to:

  • Develop joyful, rigorous lessons aligned with AI and APCSP content objectives developed by the project team and in close alignment with aiEDU’s internal guidelines for accessibility, engagement, and rigor
  • Create clear, effective instructional materials for lessons, such as slides, lesson plans, and more
    • Note: you will not be responsible for the graphic design of these materials
  • Incorporate usability, equity, and alignment feedback from the project team in accordance with the aiEDU Learning Team’s internal content review guidelines
  • Regularly communicate progress and challenges with the project team
  • Attend regular virtual team meetings

Our ideal contractor might:

  • Have 3+ years of experience teaching APCSP, with strong preference given to teachers working in Title I public schools
  • Have an equity focus with a demonstrated history of improving engagement and exam outcomes for English language learners, students with disabilities, and/or students from underrepresented backgrounds in computer science
  • Possess a deep passion for student-led, project-based, and innovative learning strategies in the field of computer science
  • Be familiar with fundamental artificial intelligence concepts and tools or feel confident in their ability to rapidly develop this knowledge
  • Program confidently in one or more languages at or above the level required on the APCSP Create Task
  • Possess the ability to work remotely and maintain a regular communication schedule with the project team

Even better if you:

  • Regularly implement data-driven and research-informed practices in your instruction
  • Have experience developing your own curriculum materials and/or modifying materials from providers
  • Are active in networks of APCSP teachers, such as Facebook groups and provider forums

Studies have shown that women and people of color are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every one of the qualifications as outlined in a job description. We are most interested in finding the best contractor for the project, and that candidate may be one who comes from a less traditional background. We would encourage you to apply, even if you don’t believe you meet every one of our qualifications as described.

Equal Employment Opportunity

The AI Education Project is an equal opportunity employer. We believe that building and empowering a diverse team is a strategic imperative in our work, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status, gender identity or expression, or any other basis protected by local, state, or federal law. This policy applies with regard to all aspects of employment, including hiring, promotion, compensation, eligibility for benefits and termination. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
