About Education First

We are a mission-driven education policy consultancy seeking two talented new members to join our Engaged Students Team.

Education First is a seasoned team of trusted advisors to the leaders responsible for delivering what many Americans want most: public education that effectively prepares all students for success in college, careers and a world of constant change. We devote our energy and expertise to improving opportunities for all children, especially low-income students and students of color. Each day we demand excellence from ourselves so that our contributions to our clients and the field result in sustainable progress in classrooms, schools and school systems.

Our mission is to deliver exceptional ideas, experience-based solutions and results so that all students – and particularly low-income students and students of color – are prepared for success in college, career and life. We work closely with policymakers, practitioners, funders and advocates to design and accelerate policies and plans that support strong systems, outstanding educators, engaged students, and effective organizations and investments.

We are a team of over 50 consultants working in more than 20 different states across the nation. We are educators, policy advisors, advocates and funders. We serve local, state and national clients in nearly every state of the union. We understand the complexity of public education – from the classroom to national policy – and we know how to navigate it. We rely on our trusted relationships and deep knowledge to develop solutions that bridge the gap between visionary leadership and pragmatic implementation.

We are both hard-working and light-hearted, passionate about student success and deeply committed to delivering with quality. Our enduring priorities define who we are: work that matters; excellence; unparalleled talent; vibrant culture. We are also committed to addressing issues of race, inclusion, diversity and equity (RIDE) internally and externally. Outstanding applicants of color are especially encouraged to apply.

Primary Responsibilities

Analysts lead research efforts and support project teams to deliver outstanding work to our clients. New analysts will be invited to join the Engaged Students team, one of three operational teams aligned to our Focus Areas. Analysts are supported by a Consultant or Senior Consultant team. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Develop research work plans, serve as lead on project teams, and ensure client deliverables meet basic research standards.
  • Gather, organize and synthesize data from multiple sources in order to narrate findings and share fact-based, persuasive analyses (e.g., for landscape scans).
  • Develop protocols, administer surveys, facilitate interviews and focus groups.
  • Contribute content knowledge in Pre-K-12 and higher education issues about research findings, federal and state policies and effective practices related to the Engaged Student’s Focus Area.
  • Organize, prioritize and process large volumes of work under tight deadlines.
  • Lead key portions of projects such as particular workstreams or work groups.
  • Develop and then collaborate with project managers to finalize “client-ready” PowerPoint presentations, policy memos, briefs, reports, strategy documents and other products drawing from documentation and research work.
  • Assist in researching and writing materials for publication.

Education First believes in coaching and supporting its staff members to meet their full potential. Over time, the Analyst will be expected and supported to develop skills in strategic planning, project management and client management.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Three to four years of directly related work experience in policy, research, political campaigns or other relevant public affairs experience in education.
  • Demonstrated understanding of current education reform issues and experience pertaining to Social and Emotional Learning, College and Career Readiness, and/or Innovative School Systems.
  • Strong qualitative research skills and experience, including interview and focus group analyses, landscape scans, literature reviews, legislative/policy analysis and/or synthesis.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in diverse team environments that require strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence.
  • Advanced word processing, email, PowerPoint, spreadsheet and design skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to translate complex topics into a clear storyline for varied audiences.
  • Working knowledge of how to translate and synthesize technical literature, quantitative research and basic survey methods.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
  • Experience teaching and/or working in a local education agency, state education agency or charter management organization, a plus.
  • Advanced degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Business, Education, or related fields preferred.

Who You Are

  • Deeply committed to building a race equity culture in which diverse perspectives are honored and every team member has agency and voice.
  • Unwavering in your commitment to improving student learning and achievement and moving education systems beyond the status quo.
  • Committed to the vision of a more equitable education system in the U.S., including willingness to examine the role of privilege, structural barriers and inclusion in changing the trajectories of students furthest from opportunity.
  • A resourceful problem solver who is able to anticipate and adjust for unexpected barriers to success.
  • Comfortable working to deadlines and multi-tasking.
  • Able to lead by influence, establishing open lines of communication on project teams and incorporating the perspective of others.

Location & Compensation

You will primarily work from home, but you should be able to travel for in-person client meetings as needed (roughly 20% travel) once it is safe to do so from a public health perspective.

Education First offers a competitive salary in the context of a transparent compensation system, a comprehensive benefits package and professional development opportunities. The range for this position is $64,000-$70,000, depending on experience and proficiency, with 20% of the offer determined by the local market trends ahead of the national market.
