We sustain our business by licensing our Application Programming Interface (API) of our calculators to partner organizations. Our customers range from early-stage startups to established organizations such as Pearson, McGraw Hill, and the College Board (makers of the SAT). That model has funded our growth for years and there are still acres of territory we have yet to cover. That's why we need your help! We're looking for someone who is self-driven and persistent, someone who can create new API partnerships and maintain existing ones. This role doesn’t have a handbook. You'll define your own pipeline, reach out to potential partners, and close deals!

What you should show up ready to teach anyone on your first day:

  • How to build a healthy pipeline from scratch.
  • A sales strategy and approach that have worked for you in the past.
  • Details about a popular selling method and why you do or don’t like it.

What you’ll learn more about after you’re hired:

  • How we identify the most relevant sales leads in ed tech.
  • How we cultivate enduring and successful partnerships.
  • How we create and maintain a tool that students and teachers love.
  • How we’ve grown so far without a marketing team (here's a hint: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=desmos,graphing%20calculator, here's another: https://twitter.com/search?q=desmos).

Within your first week, you’ll:

  • Introduce yourself on Slack to your new co-workers!
  • Learn about our existing partners and the value that Desmos brings their businesses.
  • Learn about the market and current best practices for building a pipeline, as well as the technical tools we use (ex: Salesforce and Trello).
  • Listen in on conversations with potential and existing partners.

Within your first month, you’ll:

  • Explain Desmos products to someone who’s never heard of it before.
  • Find 30 potential leads and in doing so, have a solid understanding of what differentiates an unqualified lead from a good or great lead.
  • Set up your own meetings, take your own calls, and demo the API.

Within your first three months, you’ll:

  • Balance your time between finding and qualifying new leads and maintaining existing relationships.
  • Schedule meetings for an education or technology conference, where you’ll pitch our API to executives at qualified companies.
  • Comfortably lead conversations where you determine the customer’s timeline, decision-makers, budget and product fit.
  • Project sales revenue and plan strategy that affects the direction of our company.

Within your first year, you’ll:

  • Close new business to help sustain Desmos in its mission to help students love learning mathematics!
  • Up your sales game learning from the current business development team.
  • Mentor and welcome new Desmos team members as they join.
  • Identify new markets and verticals where we should license our API.

Some impressive fast facts about Desmos that help our business development team succeed:

  • Desmos has millions of active users from all 50 states and every country in the world.
  • Desmos is the official calculator of the digital SATs and a growing number of state tests (desmos.com/testing)!
  • Desmos is beloved and widely known in the educator community (just check with any family member in middle or high school, any teacher friends, or what teachers are saying on Twitter: https://twitter.com/search?q=desmos).

Learn more about our company! Then send an email to careers@desmos.com with “Strategic Business Development” in the subject. Include your resume and a cover letter that helps us understand your preparation for the work we’ve described above.
