About the Role

The Accounting Manager will be responsible for monitoring internal controls over operations and accounting functions, supervising and coordinating the day-to-day activities of the Staff Accountant, and maintaining the general ledger and all financial records in accordance with GAAP. Reporting to the Controller, the Accounting Manager will be involved with month-end closings, external audits and 990 preparation. The Accounting Manager will also play an integral part in grant reporting including reviewing terms of grants, restrictions and coding to ensure compliance.

What You Would Do

  • Manage the day-to-day accounting operations.
  • Review and approve cash disbursements coding.
  • Review payroll (bi-weekly and semi-monthly).
  • Ensure timely processing of employee expense reimbursements.
  • Provide appropriate accounting for cash receipts.
  • Prepare journal entries including payroll.
  • Manage client billing ensuring contract terms.
  • Assist with the month-end close process, review financial results and produce financial reports.
  • Review terms of grants, interpret restrictions, and manage coding to ensure grant compliance.
  • Ensure internal control procedures are implemented and followed.
  • Assist with the audit for New Classrooms (GAAP and Single Audit) and 990 preparation.
  • Maintain adequate accounting staffing by recruiting, selecting, orienting and training employees.
  • Develop accounting staff by coaching, planning, monitoring and appraising job performance.
  • Participate in other initiatives to support the mission of New Classrooms and its employees.

What We Are Looking For

  • BA in Accounting or Finance required.
  • At least 5 years of experience in accounting with increasing responsibility in fast-paced environments. Ideal candidates will have 2 years at public accounting firm and 3+ years at a nonprofit organization.
  • High proficiency in the use of financial software applications (Intacct a plus) and advanced proficiency in Excel.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to keep up with a busy and diverse task list.
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative and entrepreneurial work environment.
  • Ability to work easily with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Team player with a willingness and eagerness to help.
  • Self-starter able to work independently and under direction.
  • CPA - a plus.
  • Working knowledge of government grant accounting and donor-restricted funds - a plus.
