POSITION SUMMARY:

The Academic Support Coach is a member of our school community charged with the care of students in both the Academic Support Programs and the Prep Advantage Program. In addition to teaching two classes in an academic discipline, she/he supports students who are struggling academically, in collaboration with the Coordinator of the Prep Advantage Program, teachers, administrators and counselors in order that they progress in becoming self-regulated learners in their pursuit of the mission of St. Joseph’s Preparatory School.

The Academic Support Coach engages students both individually and in small group settings, and interacts with academic administrators, teachers, counselors, coaches, moderators and parents to identify roadblocks and to develop strategies to address them, serving as facilitator, learning specialist, contact person, guide, and mentor.

The Academic Support Coach is tasked with identifying the most at-risk and vulnerable students in the population and working to weave them into the social, intellectual, and spiritual fabric of the school. In addition, the Academic Support Coach works directly with students in very formative moments of their lives to help them achieve their goals, realize their potential, and become the best possible versions of themselves.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors the academic progress, attendance and social/emotional well-being of academically at risk students assigned by the Prep Advantage Coordinator
  • Maintains contact with a student’s parents while working as a liaison between the teachers, academic administrators, counselors, moderators, and coaches to provide coordinated academic and social support
  • Meets with students in regularly scheduled sessions to provide support with study skills and learning strategies and develops a plan with the student for academic improvement
  • Schedules time before and after school for structured study and/or tutoring
  • Can teach two classes in an academic discipline offered at the Prep
  • Understands, appreciates, and implements the principles of Jesuit education
  • Works with teachers to integrate empirically based instruction that is rooted in Jesuit pedagogy – with special attention given to the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm and the document “Go Forth and Teach”
  • Works with teachers in identifying a student’s limitations and in developing specific plans to address and overcome them
  • Works with Catapult Learning counselors to assess students using several standardized measures of executive skills and learning and study strategies
  • Measures and tracks student achievement throughout the year, adjusting approaches and strategies when necessary
  • Meets with the Advantage Coordinator weekly and other support staff in bi-weekly meetings to assess program effectiveness and student achievement

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Proven abilities to connect with students, specifically students with academic and social difficulties, and to work one on one with students to identify and remediate those difficulties.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and proven ability to network across diverse groups of stakeholders, including parents, students, teachers and administrators.
  • Have secondary teaching experience as well as successful remediation experience.
  • Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with academic coaching to strengthen students executive function skills
  • Familiarity with assessments related to academic underachievement and developing individualized educational plans
