Senior Director, EdSurge Partnerships

The Senior Director, EdSurge Partnerships will lead the newly formed EdSurge Services team. As an integral part of the ISTE Learning Team, EdSurge Services produces high quality, original content to report on the people, ideas, and tools shaping the future of learning. Content created by the team appears in public-facing websites, newsletters, microsites, reports, guides, and may also be provided directly to partners for internal or external use. EdSurge Services’ work is supported by a variety of funders - high profile partners and clients, including state departments of education, leading philanthropic foundations, edtech companies, and education organizations. EdSurge Services partners with research organizations, media outlets, and advocacy organizations to deepen our impact. Our partners rely on EdSurge Services for best-in-class, highly credible writing, research, interpretation, and analysis.

The EdSurge Services team works closely with the EdSurge Journalism team to further the mission of the EdSurge brand: to grow a community of active and informed education stakeholders and inspire transformative action and change.

The EdSurge Services team unites three distinct and successful subteams:

  • EdSurge Research investigates questions central to improving the future of teaching and learning through research-informed storytelling, field building research, and consultative research.
  • EdSurge Solutions Studio works directly with solution providers, collaboratively crafting stories that position clients as thought leaders and problem solvers for education.
  • EdSurge Advertising helps education organizations increase brand awareness, making use of sponsorable assets such as newsletters, podcasts, and Twitter campaigns.

About The Role:

The Senior Director, EdSurge Partnerships will cultivate existing relationships and develop new partnerships with funders and thought leaders throughout the industry. This role is primarily responsible for developing and securing funded projects for each of the EdSurge Services subteams, as well as seeking recurring operational grant opportunities to support the EdSurge Journalism team. This person will build upon and actively expand EdSurge’s existing network of philanthropic organizations, nonprofits, and for-profit companies to seek out these opportunities.

The Senior Director, EdSurge Partnerships will oversee the operations of all three EdSurge Service subteams, enabling each to achieve its strategic goals. This includes forecasting, managing sizable budgets, revenue generation, and operational effectiveness. This role is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing a newly formed, incredibly talented, and strategically important team.

For this position, we are considering candidates who may report to our offices in Portland, OR, or Arlington, VA, as well as candidates from outside those immediate geographic areas. Full-time remote or hybrid remote/in-office arrangements will be considered for the right candidate.

Expected Job Functions

External Functions

  • Business Development - Develop new partnerships and cultivate existing relationships with funders, partners and clients throughout the industry to ensure that EdSurge Services is the go-to destination for organizations who want to further priorities in teaching and learning.
  • Pitching and Selling - Support team members to refine and craft concept papers and proposals, translating relationships with funders into sold projects and engagements for the divisions to deliver on.
  • Partner Relationship Management - While individual team members will maintain most day-to-day relationships with external partners, you will help to create and nurture new partner relationships and demonstrate how to delight funders and partners with exceptional service and thought partnership.

Team Management and Operations

  • Personnel Management - Create an operational model to manage the EdSurge Services team. Division leads and staff will report directly to the Senior Director, EdSurge Partnerships.
  • Resource Allocation - Work with the EdSurge Services team to ensure that all projects and engagements are staffed and resourced appropriately.
  • Budget Forecasting and Management - Manage team budgets and forecasting across the subteams. Generate and grow a reliable surplus of revenue year over year.
  • Project Pipeline Oversight - Work with the EdSurge Services team to identify and understand potential projects and partnerships that are strategically important for EdSurge, ISTE, and the industry.
  • Internal Coordination - Ensure that the EdSurge Services team can work cross-functionally with the EdSurge Journalism team to ensure smooth collaboration and shared projects or assets. Represent the EdSurge Services team in internal ISTE meetings, disseminating information to the team. Identify opportunities for EdSurge Services that come through ISTE sales and partnerships teams.
  • Team Process Coordination - Take the lead on aligning the three divisions by coordinating appropriate cross-division and cross-functional meetings, suggesting improvements to existing documentation, and creating new processes. Lead in creating a vibrant and inclusive team culture.


Experience and Education

  • Prior Experience
  • The ideal candidate will have some of these experiences:
  • Experience working in media, news, associations, or nonprofits
  • Leading client-facing sales within the education, philanthropy, or nonprofit sector
  • Experience in consultative sales roles
  • 7-10 years of professional experience with progressive levels of leadership responsibility, ideally in operations or partnership roles
  • 3+ years of experience in PK-20 educational contexts
  • 5+ years of experience leading and managing teams and deep interest in supporting individual team members’ professional growth
  • Experience in and aptitude for resource allocation and budgeting
  • Track record forming and managing external partnerships that meet revenue goals year over year
  • Proven ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, with strong project management and presentation skills
