Educational Technologist

Cengage Learning - Remote - Full time


As a member of the Instructional Design and Delivery team, the Educational Technologist’s primary responsibilities are to contribute his or her technical expertise in integrating Cengage Learning (CL) and third-party assets with the top learning management systems (LMS) in support of the team’s custom curriculum development projects. This is a high-visibility, high-accountability position on a team that facilitates the sale of large institutional online program adoptions, and that requires an individual with extensive LMS experience in higher education and foundational instructional design knowledge. The Educational Technologist must stay informed of changing educational technology, be committed to details, and be able to manage his or her time to project deadlines without excuse. This individual must also value clear, timely communication and effective collaboration while working cross-functionally within CL and directly with college administrators, vendors, and contractors.


Serves as dedicated team expert on CL, Learning Objects and third-party product integration with a variety of LMSs to achieve a successful student online course experience

  • Maintains familiarity and proficiency in all relevant CL and industry standard technology platforms to facilitate CL-LMS integration
  • Collaborates with the project team to identify technology and implementation priorities and needs
  • Builds and maintains relationships with internal and external resources and stakeholders to guarantee the efficient development and delivery of custom online curriculum
  • Builds or revises courses or prototypes for internal or external clients in their designated LMS
  • Consults with a production team to build or revise courses in the client’s LMS
  • Communicates/translates client’s technology specifications to the production team
  • Creates and maintains necessary processes, procedures, and documentation pertinent to the success of the role and in support of the team’s mission
  • Provides training and support to team members as needed for their success in designing curriculum that reflects the functionality of the products and LMS

Effectively manages time and work quality according to the expectations of the project and the stated project plan

  • Ensures the delivered online course projects meet high quality standards by conducting quality assurance tests
  • Works under sometimes very tight timeframes while maintaining quality
  • Communicates regularly and openly with the project team on status, challenges, and risks
  • Actively participates in meetings pertinent to the success of the team and related projects

Provides instructional design support

  • recommends design improvements that better support how products are integrated
  • conducts the mapping of content to learning outcomes
  • drafts on-ground or online course syllabi and course outlines according to instructional design best practices
  • researches and recommends and/or uses common digital learning design tools to support the design of custom curriculum

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university
  • 3+ years of experience designing/building online courses in an LMS in a post-secondary environment
  • Advanced use of at least two of Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, D2L, or other top LMS
  • Identify web accessibility requirements in online course delivery
  • Work effectively on remote teams
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and effective presentations, procedures and processes

  • Master’s degree or additional coursework or certification in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, or related
  • Certifications or coursework in project management
  • 5+ years of experience working in higher education, publishing, LMS management, or related
  • 2+ years of experience as an instructional designer
  • 1+ years working as a remote employee
  • Specific knowledge of integrating CL products
  • Specific knowledge of integrating third party digital products
  • Advanced use of Word, intermediate use of Excel and PowerPoint
  • Advanced use of three or more: Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, D2L, or other top LMS
  • Intermediate to advanced use of e-learning development tools such as Storyline and Captivate
  • Advanced skills in digital learning technology including web conferencing, video editing, web design, HTML5, or interaction design
