ABOUT THE ROLE OF SENIOR DESIGNER OF ADULT LEARNING

reDesign’s Sr. Designer of Adult Learning will build and lead a small team of creative, bold, learning designers who have deep experience in designing and leading adult development experiences, whether running workshops, or creating engaging, flexible self-paced modules. You can balance the art of instructional and UX design with the science of product development to create innovative and effective learner-centered experiences. You stand out with a holistic, learner-first approach to design. You understand the need to continue to design toolkits, guides and slide decks, for educators who are still developing their tech skills. At the same time, you are excited by the potential of the metaverse as an arena where engaged learning can be unleashed. You may have experience creating learning games and apps, or digital assets.

You have cracked the nut of boring professional learning, creating adult learning experiences that engage and value educators, providing them with deep and meaningful opportunities to develop relevant new skills and practices. You can make complex ideas and practices accessible and actionable, supporting practitioners and leaders at all levels of the system as they deepen their understanding of personalized & competency-based learning, change leadership, performance assessment, scaffolding, and learner-centered pedagogy.

As the Sr. Designer of Adult Learning you will lead complex projects as they move through multiple design cycles. You’ll be expected to travel up to 20% to facilitate adult learning experiences at convenings, conferences and institutes. You’ll work closely with, and report to, reDesign’s Creative Director or Director of Product Development to ensure the health, performance, and impact of your projects.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Apply reDesign’s frameworks for learner-centered pedagogy and design in the development of adult learning experience assets
  • Codify and “upscale” reDesign’s extensive existing adult learning assets and materials, developing a coherent set of offerings and resources that can be used to support adult learners across a broad range of contexts
  • Design new prototypes for adult learning experiences, assets and products that support educators in deepening and broadening their capacity to nurture learners’ connectedness, competency and critical consciousness, in alignment with our initiatives to reimagine learning outcomes, and our rigor toolbox
  • Apply adult development and learning research to learning designs, to ensure we consistently engage, animate and support adult learners
  • Designa range of engaging and rigorous materials that support adult learning both in-person and virtually: facilitation guides, toolkits, workshop materials, and virtual courses and modules
  • Develop multimedia assets that support a high-level of engagement and deep learning
  • Design and iterate using established Quality Criteria for the product/project, and contribute to articulating emergent new criteria
  1. Support educators and other adult supporters of young people in their efforts to improve learners’ experiences and outcomes
  • Facilitate high-impact professional learning experiences in both virtual and in-person settings, in line with reDesign’s core frameworks and key methodologies
  • Create learner-centered communities for adults, using strengths-based strategies and practices to create learning experiences where adults experience connectedness, and develop their competency, and critical consciousness
  • Facilitate robust learning experiences for reDesign team members, ensuring that the reDesign team continues to expand and deepen their knowledge of core frameworks and key methodologies as well as new products and services
  • Mentor reDesign’s Education Consultants and School Coaches as they co-plan and co-facilitate with clients to ensure that institutes, courses, and other assets support clients’ vision, needs, and plans
  • Travel as needed (~20%) to facilitate adult learning experiences at convenings, conferences and institutes; and to coach and mentor reDesign team members as they facilitate adult learning experiences for clients and partners
  1. Lead key aspects of reDesign’s Design Lab
  • Hire, supervise and mentor a small team of Adult Learning Designers, in accordance with reDesign’s Learning and Performance Support model and policies
  • Lead internal project teams effectively for the full project life cycle, including: project design, scope of work development, project planning, project management, budget oversight, project health monitoring and evaluation, team coordination and support, creative problem-solving, and reporting
  • Lead critical review and feedback cycles to build a healthy culture committed to collaborative design, deliberate risk-taking and failing-fast
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure reDesign’s adult learning products and services are implemented effectively, advancing educational equity and resulting in accelerated learning for learners with diverse learning needs, goals and interests
  • Pursue new grant funding: develop pitches, proposals and scopes of work, showcase models and successes at conferences, reports, articles, blogs and social media postings
  • Step into emergent internal roles at reDesign to support key organizational activities
  1. Align and coordinate our learning design projects with other organizational initiatives, collaborating with reDesign’s:
  • Sr. Learning Experience and Curriculum Designer in the development of guides, modules, institutes and toolkits that support educators/adult supporters in facilitating and guiding learners in the use of reDesign’s learning designs
  • Communications team to develop a consistent, branded style for all adult learning assets
  • Product design team to refine and/or develop new designs and products that support learners in developing connectedness, competence, and critical consciousness
  • Research design team in testing and piloting adult learning design

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Training and expertise in some of the following: competency-based learning, assessment systems, educational policy, change leadership theory and practice, culturally responsive and sustaining practices, school model design, learner-centered practices
  • Training and expertise in some of the following: adult development theory, the design and facilitation of effective adult learning programs and initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to apply learning and instructional design principles, learning theory, and educational technologies in the design and development of print and online learning experiences for adults
  • Extensive experience hiring, supervising and mentoring employees
  • 7+ years of leadership in training, mentoring, and coaching designers in adult learning experience and assessment design
  • 2+ years experience teaching middle and/or high school age learners
  • Proven track record in designing print-based learner-facing materials for adults: facilitation guides, toolkits, self-paced modules and courses
  • Experience working with product teams to create a quality user experience in addition to building learning assets and/or curriculum, while staying in budget and within project timelines
  • Highly organized with the ability to meet deadlines, manage projects and people, attend to details, and manage multiple, complex tasks simultaneously
  • Experience managing vendors and/or working with multimedia teams to develop engaging multimedia content
  • Highly tech-savvy: Adept at mastering new tech platforms and programs; experience using several of the following programs: Google Apps for Education, learning management systems, eLearning authoring tools such as: the Articulate Suite of products, Camtasia, Adobe Suite, etc; multimedia tools; and fluent in the use of project management software and a range of virtual collaboration tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage the interests and passions of young people from racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities
  • An awareness and understanding of institutional, structural, and cultural manifestations of racism and bias and their impact on minoritized communities
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with high capacity to build strong collegial and mentoring relationships, work effectively in a virtual team environment
