Director of Data Science

Position Overview:

Summit Public Schools is seeking a Data Scientist / Researcher to transform data into insights for the organization. This role will lie on Summit’s DNA Squad, the data and analytics arm of our Research and Development team.

This role will lead many complex analyses related to the academic program of the schools within the Summit network as well as schools in our Basecamp program. Our personalized approach utilizes a variety of technologies, including our own platform, the Personalized Learning Plan, developed in conjunction with Facebook. This position will work with data from the many different systems we utilize to draw insights, create data tools, and implement measurement systems which can facilitate learning and development within our schools. The role will be focused on rigorous data analysis and research development.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Data Capture/Report Creation

  • Employ user-centered design techniques to develop innovative, custom reports for the organization
  • Create reports in Tableau, Excel, and other reporting systems on a weekly basis
  • Create data tools that individuals at Summit and Basecamp sites can use to visualize and analyze data
  • Interface with teachers and school leaders to determine data necessary to improve school performance
  • Troubleshoot data issues to ensure accuracy of data reporting

Data Analysis

  • Lead development of analysis priorities and appropriate methodologies
  • Use statistical techniques to determine effectiveness of specific instructional practices and organizational pilots
  • Support Summit’s innovation by identifying ways the organization can measure its success
  • Manipulate and quality check data within internal servers and reports


  • Identify appropriate research approaches to understand and test the various interventions occurring within the organization
  • Support the development of a measurement and research agenda
  • Facilitate our organization in being on the leading edge of educational research

Partnership & Team Support

  • Partner with relevant parts of the organization on special projects to bring data and measurement to organizational developments
  • Work closely with internal research team to develop analysis agenda
  • Develop and lead trainings for Summit staff and Basecamp staff in using and analyzing data
  • Support the development of analyses that can be shared externally with funders, our board, and partner organizations

Key Qualities and Skills:

  • Professional experience in quantitative data collection, analysis, interpretation, and/or reporting
  • Demonstrated interest in, or passion for, the education sector
  • Exceptional quantitative skills
  • Exceptional skills with Microsoft Excel
  • Commitment to learn R, Tableau and other relevant data software
  • Manages ambiguity and develops forward-moving solutions

  • Strong interpersonal, writing, communication and presentation skills
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with exceptionally strong attention to detail

Additional Skills Preferred:

  • Tutoring or teaching experience
  • Knowledge of database structures and systems
  • Writing and adapting SQL queries
  • Data visualization experience, especially with Tableau
  • Ability to transform raw, unclean datasets for useful analysis
  • Proficiency in SPSS, Stata, Python, or R


  • Must have at least a bachelor’s degree (a Master’s Degree in Education and/or in a quantitative research based field preferred)
  • Meet health clearance, and pass the reference, background/criminal checks, per education code.
