ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Alpha Public Schools is a network of public charter schools serving the students of East San Jose. Alpha’s mission is to provide children from high- poverty communities with an education that effectively develops the academic skills and character competencies to overcome the achievement gap and graduate from college.

ROLE SUMMARY

Alpha Public Schools is a new network of public charter schools, operating secondary schools that use blended learning approaches to enhance teaching and personalize students’ learning experience. As part of Alpha's unique blended learning model, part-time Learning Coaches provide academic intervention to targeted groups of students. They teach supplemental curriculum, provide tutoring with homework, and mentorship in the after school program. Learning Coaches must be skilled at tracking student progress, and they must communicate with classroom teachers and collaborate effectively as part of a team. Effective part-time Learning Coaches will be invited to apply for a full-time Learning Coach position at Alpha Public Schools.

Schedules vary slightly depending on school site but, part time learning coaches are on-site primarily from 2:30pm-6:30pm (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday) and 12:30pm-6:30pm (Thursday). Please note that preference will be given to applicants who are available for the times outlined.

  • COLLABORATIVE: Alpha learning coaches engage and work closely with fellow staff members and they demonstrate strong communication and relationship building with students, families, and colleagues.
  • COMMITTED: Alpha learning coaches demonstrate a desire and commitment to working with middle-school aged children, the ability to motivate and support children in reaching high levels of academic success and hold students to high expectations.
  • ENTREPRENEURIAL: Alpha learning coaches are risk takers who innovate and problem-solve to best suit the needs of students. They learn from data, and act on constructive criticism to improve their craft.
  • DRIVEN: Alpha learning coaches have a relentless drive to advance the minds and lives of students in and out of the classrooms. They have a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • FLEXIBLE: Alpha learning coaches adapt to meet the needs of students and a startup work environment.
  • EXPERIENCE:
    • Conversational Spanish or Vietnamese a plus.
    • Previous experience managing and/or teaching groups of middle school-aged students preferred.
    • Ability to communicate proactively and effectively with supervisor, teachers, administrators, fellow staff members, and families.
    • Basic computer skills, including troubleshooting and ability to communicate about technical difficulties.
    • Capacity to analyze and manage student data in order to track and support student progress.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction & Delivery

  • Implement pre-planned curricula aligned to Common Core standards when serving as a substitute teacher
  • Participate in all professional development meetings/retreats and opportunities to further enhance your expertise as an educator and leadership skills as an Alpha employee
  • Complete all requirements in the Learning Coach professional growth plan
  • Reflect regularly on your practice and act on constructive feedback
  • Procter student assessments as necessary
  • Plan and implement student academic interventions as required
  • Successfully complete a Learning Coach special project

Relationship Management

  • Reinforce a safe, fun and academically challenging classroom culture
  • Hold all students to high expectations both academic and behavior
  • Develop positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues

Data Driven

  • Support teachers and students with all blended learning applications to ensure data is collected in a timely and accurate manner
  • Analyze data with school leaders and classroom teachers as needed
