Alternatives in Action is a leader in the youth development field committed to inspiring and preparing the next generation of leaders to transform their lives and the communities around them. Each year we prepare over 1,300 youth for success in college, career, and community through four key strategies: youth leadership development through a cascading leadership model; comprehensive extended day programs at three OUSD high schools; the operation of a charter high school focused on high risk youth; career and college readiness development, including operating an Early Childhood Education Center that serves as a learning lab for youth pursuing careers in education. We are a fast-paced learning organization that works to balance innovation with programmatic depth. Our staff of 70 and the youth and family population we serve are diverse and committed to social equity, quality youth programs and community-building. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Alternatives in Action is seeking an experienced leader to work closely with the Executive Director to provide strategic direction and management of our fund development department and key programmatic initiatives as we grow our 5 million dollar budget over the next few years. The Deputy Director will be a mission-focused, strategic and process-minded leader with experience leading a high performance staff team.
ALTERNATIVES IN ACTION IS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO:
Brings 4+ years of experience as a senior organizational leader including staff management, strategic planning and Board interface in a non-profit or educational setting
Will have extensive fund development experience with an emphasis on expanding individual and corporate giving in an education/youth development non-profit setting along with foundation and governmental funding knowledge
Brings leadership experience in marketing and communication
Has leadership experience in complex, multi-site organizations
Understands the youth development and education landscape
Is flexible and enjoys working in a diverse, entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment with passionate, talented and committed people
Has demonstrated experience and cultural fluency working with the key communities we serve (African-American and Latino); bilingual (Spanish-English) preferred
Values education and learning and holds a Masters in a related field (preferred)
Has the ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively as needed
Fund Development (75%): Management of a fund development team to develop and achieve fund development goals including growth of individual, corporate, government, and foundation giving strategies
oIn collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and implement a comprehensive, strategic fundraising plan with specific measurable goals that will enable Alternatives in Action to meet its future goals.
oInitiate, cultivate, manage, and steward relationships with the organization’s portfolio of individual, foundation and corporate supporters.
oIdentify, research, and investigate new opportunities for funding from a wide variety of philanthropic and individual sources to expand Alternatives in Action’s donor base.
oBuild and refine operational and technological infrastructure to maximize the potential of the development department, with a particular focus on leveraging Salesforce for pipeline management and donor cultivation.
Organizational Leadership (10%): Partner with Executive Director on institutional priorities, culture development, and long-range planning; provide staff support to the Board of Directors
oLead a collaborative process with the Executive Director, Board of Directors and its committees; support the board to perform and lead with confidence, execute decisions effectively and ensure that the Executive Director, Board and its committees are informed of critical developments in a timely and effective manner.
oAdvance deep understanding of Alternatives in Action’s vision and programs among staff, Board of Directors and key volunteers, and work collaboratively with them to integrate fund development strategies throughout the organization; enhance board members’ ability to identify fundraising opportunities and encourage and support their ongoing participation as donors and solicitors.
oGenerate, analyze and present regular updates to the Executive Director and to the Board of Directors on fundraising progress and create special reports as needed.
oStaff the Board of Director’s Development Committee and other ad-hoc committees as needed
oSupport organization’s strategic and annual planning efforts; serve on the organization’s leadership team and build cross-organizational relationships and support for development efforts.
Special Initiatives (15%): Strategic and tactical leadership in the development of key programmatic areas to further organizational priorities
oManage development of key strategic and capital initiatives including the launch in 2017 of the Early Childcare Education Center.
