As the 1070 Director of Student Systems, this position will report to the Executive Director and be a part of the Department of Technology (DoT), and lead the projects with a focus on cross-collaboration, coherence, school and division partnerships, and effective change management. You will play a key leadership role in leading the Department of Technology’s student data systems to deliver on the promises outlined in both Transform Learning. Transform Lives. as well as our long-term, city-wide North Star, Vision 2025. We want someone who will:

  • Design and implement effective collaboration and operational structures across the system in ways that support the successful implementation of tech-enabled projects while fostering and maintaining positive relationships with school communities and partners that will contribute to an effective impact on student achievement.
  • Spearhead effective, high-quality implementation of student systems modules and functionalities and projects with an explicit focus on our focal student populations to ensure that our student systems meet the needs of our schools.
  • This position will engage cross-departmental work in identifying areas of strength,positive impact and challenges, with a critical lens to keep equity paramount, by interrupting, disrupting, and dismantling systems that perpetuate historical inequalities.
  • Participates with the cross departmental management in strategic planning to meet District initiatives, policy and governance development, and problem resolution of complex issues and needs of the District.
  • Evaluates, recommends, and implements programmatic methods to maximize the operational efficiency of the Department of Technology
  • Supervises the Student Systems teamDemonstrate a Leadership Mindset
  • Establish strategies for the student data systems and team that is aligned to SFUSD’s overall technology vision to help SFUSD deliver on the Digital District Plan and Vision 2025.
  • Identify opportunities for improving business processes through automation; prepare proposals for the consolidation of systems to improve business processes in collaboration with the appropriate district workgroups
  • Assist in designing and implementing processes for data retrieval and submission to Unified Data System using Ed-Fi methodology.
  • Define best practices, innovate on processes, and evangelize across the team, Department of Technology, and SFUSD
  • Lead strategy and implementation of student data systems toward the long-term vision for a coherence technology ecosystem focused on continuous improvement and sustainability.

  • Develop and deliver executive presentations on status, metrics, and product roadmaps for student systems, including all compliance requirements.
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of Federal and State reporting requirements
  • Develop procedures and direct implementation of permanent student record/transcript preservation, distribution, and retrieval in accordance with Federal and State legislation and Board policy
  • Determine allocation of resources and installation schedules; prepare feasibility studies; determine operating characteristics and requirements; monitor and report progress of work for and student data systems upgrades.
  • Assure proper planning, development, documentation, installation and testing of systems to meet end user requirements; manage system maintenance activities.
  • Prepare budgetary cost estimates and develop project implementation proposals for any system consolidations or upgrades, documentation and scheduling; write technical specifications and requests for proposals.
  • Create work plans and monitor progress of project tasks; review staff work and train staff relating to the project work.
  • Anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, anticipate and make tradeoffs, and help balance the business needs versus technical constraints.
  • Develop and provide in-service activities and procedural manuals to administrators, teachers regarding reporting procedures for enrollment/attendance, FTE, student records, special education information system applications
  • Demonstrated ability in excellent execution and project management skills, including ability to balance the big picture with detailed steps
  • Outstanding critical thinking skills, including the ability to analyze data, identify trends, pinpoint problems and root causes, and develop innovative solutions

  • Actively manage and coach direct reports to drive optimal performance.
  • Support the implementation and provide training for school-based administrators, counselors, staff on use of student information systems applications;
  • Revise and disseminate departmental procedures and serves as a resource for various planning committees
  • Exercise strong consultative and facilitation skills in staffing key district workgroups, working as a project manager, expert, supporter, and executor of key deliverables related to their scopes of work.
  • Create professional development opportunities for direct reports and others in the Department of Technology
  • Assist in building departmental camaraderie through presentations at All-Team Meetings and Leadership Team meetings
  • Assess team bench strength, skill set and capacity in order to adjust resource plans as needed
  • Meet regularly with assigned staff individually and as a team to supervise, evaluate and provide ongoing, timely, and relevant feedback, develop career paths, and identify and eliminate blockers and obstacles to progress and delivery on work.

    Manage Relationships

  • Act as liaison with Department of Special Education, Department of Enrollment and Planning Services, Department of Research, Planning, and Accountability, and the Student and Family Support Division
  • Support communication between State Department of Education, local Board, school and other and community members for the purpose of providing requested student information
  • Provide technical support services to other agencies and departments on existing systems, as well as technical requirements for system upgrades and integrations related to student systems and student data.
  • Communicate with internal teams, stakeholders and partners on a regular basis. Ensure all parties have accurate and current information.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:Bachelors degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience:Four (4) years of experience in system administration, information systems development, maintenance and support, or information technology project management, including five (5) years of supervisory experienceDesired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university within Education, Business Administration, Management, Public Administration
  • Experience working in a K-12 school district
  • Experience working in urban education
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required
  • Familiarity with Special Education Information System (SEIS), Synergy SIS, and Illuminate
  • Knowledge of San Francisco’s public schools/urban public schools and a passionate belief in SFUSD’s commitment to instructional leadership as a lever toward delivering on the SFUSD Graduate Profile

SFUSD offers a competitive salary of $120,095.62 - $163,453.92 annually, commensurate with experience in a similar position.
